Veendam Ducks and DITs!!!

Quack! SunFlower is talking about forgoing a pre-cruise in NYC and perhaps just flying in early on departure day. Other options may include staying over in New Jersey.

I Almost always fly in 1 or 2 days earlier. The one time I decided to fly in on the day of departure. My plane was late and I miss the ship. I know it cost for the Hotel and meals, but missing the ship is not fun!!

Excellent post, suer!

I used to live in NYC and return there several times a year on business. Despite the hotel cost, I do suggest that those who need to fly do so at least a day early. The airports are not all that close to the piers. If there's a parade in town -- as there may very likely be on Memorial Day weekend, the usual 45-minute ride from LaGuardia can become at least twice that time.

Although hotels can be pricey, it's not all that difficult to find an inexpensive meal. (And, I'm not talking about street vendors. :) ) I'm happy to look into some options as the time approaches. (Hey, I'm not going on the cruise; at least I can do something.)

I also have many money-saving tips for Bermuda that can help offset the NYC costs. Not eliminate them, but make somewhat of a dent.

Calgon and SunFlower - I urge you NOT to try to fly in the day of departure. May 30th might be an option, but not May 29th itself. JUST KIDDING!!!! Seriously, fly in at least one day early. As I mentioned in a previous post, staying near one of the three major airports will always be an option...and we'll compare HAL transfers versus other transfers to the pier.

Lisa - thank you for your offer to help.

One of many things we did during our conference in Banff was discussing shore options. So, in due course, we'll have some things up our sleeves. It's simply too early now for May 2011 rates.

Am finding some hotel stuff, at more resonable rates, with the airport hotels. OK. Will be in early .....

Thanks for the urging/gentle reminders ladies!

Listen to Mama Duck when she says the airport hotels will be less expensive than hotels in Manhattan. I only lived there 27 years. For those who may want Manhattan, it will be a question of picking and choosing CAREFULLY.

For quite a few years, I've used Crestwood Limousine Service in and around Manhattan, and have found them to be very reliable. Again, it's far too early to check costs and compare then to other transfer options that will be available for the cruise.

Mama knows best.

Calgon if you have never to the Big Apple it is worth seeing for a day or two if you are able. It is an amazing Country. :boogie:

Thank you, Suer.

I've been blessed to sail in and out of New York Harbor (Manhattan) since 1951. I never tire of seeing the Statue of Liberty (especially) and Ellis Island on departure, and the Manhattan skyline at dawn on arrival. It's a very emotional feeling. It's also very emotional to "see" the two missing skyscrapers at the southern tip of Manhattan. :bawl:

Used to live in NYC. Was stationed at Fort Hamilton (under the VZ bridge). Was also up at West Point (for awhile). One place I'd like to visit, if it's still there, is Mama Leone's. A really good Italian restaurant in Downtown Manhattan. They took pity on USMA cadets and allowed them to run a tab, to be paid after graduation and commissioning. ... Yes, when I left the academy, one of my first stops was at Mama's to have one final great meal and pay off the bill ....

Is Mama's still open. or has it gone the way of so many wonderful memories?

Are you going somewhere, Calgon, that you're counting down?

Well ... was thinking of invading Bermuda. Anyone want to join me?

Mama Leone's that we knew is long gone, Calgon.

As for Bermuda, if you twist my arm, I might consider it.

Not twist Mama Duck arm (wing). Mama Duck has scepter (and knows how to use it!).

Oh no .... starting to fall into Enforcer Duck mode .......

(off hunting globugs ........)

Calgon, if you find a specific Globug, tell her we miss her and hope she's getting better. Bermuda sounds so far away, but being old, time has a way of doing the fast forward thing. Double time would be nice!

We loved Manhattan when we stayed there before our Canada/New England cruise, but yes, the hotel was expensive, and the room postage stamp size. The Guardian Angel group was having its street fair that Saturday before we left for the ship, and we had a fantastic time. I had always heard questionable things about street vendor food, but everything we tried was great. Nice prices on everything, too. I know it sounds crazy, but I had lots of fun in the M&M store, with every kind of M&M that was being made. That's one cruise I would like to do again, but aren't they all?

Message from Mama Duck to all Ducks and D.I.T.s ...

Check your e-mail sometime tomorrow, probably tomorrow afternoon. Yes, that means I have fares.
