earl even though it is a tad early to discuss hotels. This is just my opinion here.....
First, get the MIA or FLL mentality out of your mind. Free shuttles, free breakfast does not exist. Pay, pay, pay does. Walking, taxis, car service is the means of transportation. Renting a car is suicide as well as paying for parking will cost you as much as the cruise, okay not that much. But you will spend most of your time trying to park it.
Your least expensive hotels will be by the airport(s). Flying into LGA, or JFK imo are your best options. Add in transportation costs to get into Manhattan. EWR is also an option but again add in the transportation costs and time.
You might save on the front end, but will pay on the back end.
I sailed out of Brooklyn last year. I stayed at the Hyatt at Grand Central Station and got a bargoon price of 300.00 a night plus taxes. hotels in Times Square and near Central Park were between 500-600 a night for that time frame.
Another time, I used points to stay at a Marriott family hotel in Time Square. That was 550.00 a night otherwise. The hotel is 11/2 miles from the pier and took 25 minutes by taxi to get there.

Another time, we stayed the W hotel. The lobby was beautiful. We paid 250.00 a night with a group rate and the room was smaller than an inside cabin on a ship. If I had a 29" suitcase they would have had to hold it for me, unless I put it in the bathtub. The door of the room, hit the nite stand when you opened it.
Manhattan has so much to offer and I
STRONGLY suggest that those who have never been there take the time either pre or post to explore. Bring aspirin, as the hustle and bustle for non city folk give most people a headache.
Who knows what hotel costs will be like in 2011.
As a true suburbanite, where anything longer than 10 minutes travel time is considered a family outing, Manhattan is a whole different way of life. They walk from point A to point B

and most of the residents dont own a car.
