This was my first Hal cruise but it will not be my last. Paw and I found the Maasdam was the ideal size for us. We do no normally participate in a lot of activities so this was not a problem for us. The ship is showing some wear as any ship its age is but my furniture is of the same age at home and I still enjoy the older things.I really enjoyed the subdued decor and the lovely antiques and fresh flowers around the ship. We found the staff were all very efficient and helpful. The passengers were very friendly. I can recommend this ship to anyone who likes a quiet leisurly cruise with good service. Food was very good. The sugar free deserts were excellent..

So glad you enjoyed your first HAL cruise, Maw. Did you find someplace suitable to set up your "office"??? :grin

Welcome Home, Maw.

I'm so happy to hear you enjoyed Maasdam so much. We love that ship and have enjoyed a great many cruises on her with another set of back-to-backs booked for June.

IMO Maasdam is a beautiful, elegant wonderful ship. She does not have the chrome and glitz and neon others prefer. :) That is why I love her so. I find her cozy and welcoming with the 'perfect' spot for most everyone. We find as much 'action' as we want when aboard and as much quiet as we enjoy when aboard. Always able to find a quiet nook to read a book, have a quiet conversation and enjoy a drink, or simply sit and watch the 'motion of the ocean'.

What I really like about her the very most is her crew. While, of course, crew comes and goes from all the ships, Maasdam always seems to have a very happy, very friendly crew who are always so good to us.

Hope to meet you aboard "MY " :) Maasdam some day.

I agree, maw. Those sugar-free desserts were wonderful. And they had a marvelous selection of them, as well. :) I am glad you enjoyed your Maasdam cruise.

And yes -- where was your office?

Office was in or near Dolphin Bar. You could always find someone there you knew if not the whole bunch at one time. We would get our lunches and come there to eat or snack or quinch our thirst. Was thirsty a lot it seemed.

Yeah maw that Soda Coolie sure did get used.:thumb We will most likely venture on the HAL line again with few more clues as to how things work. Like any cruiseline HAL has a LOT of Plusses and some minuses as well. Its just a matter of familiarizing ourselves with them that makes a cruise that MUCH more enjoyable. :dance

Maw, your office was the best place on the whole ship.

I also enjoyed the displays of the blue and white pottery.. and like you I love the old stuff.. but I guess growing up in a place that was over 300 years old will do that to you :grin

One nice place to relax would have been that area just outside the piano bar, where they had two loungers set up.. unfortunately they were the kind that want to give you a massage, and demand money :lol I did try sitting in them, thinking that it would demand money a couple of times and then stop, but unfortunately that was not the case, as the recording just kept going.

I never actually saw anyone using it the whole cruise, so hopefully HAL will take them out and put something there for us to relax in and watch the waves go by.

red, I know of those chairs. I was going to photograph our little mascot in one, but wondered if they would still be in place couple of months later as I never saw anyone use them. :)

Unfortunately, those pay massage chairs have been around awhile and haven't gone away yet.
They were on the Statendam last December/January. I gave HAL feedback via the little cards that said I thought they cheapened the ship and made it look like a state fair rather than a cruise I paid a great deal of money for.
Please, somebody, make them go away!

I liked the pottery too Red. I REALLY loved the glasses from the 18th century. They had a swirl base. I think they were flutes.

We loved visiting Maw's office. It was one of our higlights of the trip :)

As far as the Massage chairs.. I wonder if the one with the annoying voice is still unplugged?? :lol

If someone is sailing soon.. check out the one closest to the wall and give us a report.

thank you sails, actually I knew that, but did not think it too important to mention to people who might not have had the chance to see it or own it.

edited to add a picture of a couple of pieces of the more modern Delft... it is beautiful, and I always enjoy using it.

It was great cruising with all the Weenies.

Since we arrived late into Norfolk we had to be out of our cabins by 9:00 AM. So a few of us set up shop in those vibrating chairs. One of them just let us sit there, however the other one kept 'telling' us to deposit money. So I picked up the chair and unplugged it. Wonder if anyone's noticed yet? :grin

I hope not Marc, that was such a nice spot to sit in. Perhaps s7s can check it out by sitting in it when she cruises on the ship again.

I have some friends that will be on the Maasdam tomorrow. In fact, I'd better check when they want to head there since I'm driving them. I'll have to have them check.

It's funny. We got back last week, and it seems that the cruise was months ago.

yes it does :( I really enjoy the relaxing way we function as a group. Maw and Paw were our hub, and we tend to gravitate there, yet no one felt the need to check in or do what others were doing. In a way it is like a small neighborhood where we all live our own lives, yet bump into friends as we go our way.

Actually, Red, I seemed to think that knowing the name of the Delft'ware' would be of even more use to people who had NOT seen Maasdam's collection. They may have seen Delft lsewhere and be familiar with it from another source, they, therefore, would be able to know about what you were speaking. "Blue and White Pottery'" could just have easily been referring to Willoware, for example. And, of course, as you know, they are very different.

you are so right sails.

But I was really thinking about the people who might not know what in the heck Delft or Delftware was. And much as we might like to think we know everything... none of us do.. we all have our areas of expertice..and also our blind spots.:lol

If I said "check out the Delftware" they might not know what I am talking about. But if I say look at the blue china.. Well, perhaps some day they are on a ship and see it and remember someone talking about it, and stop to check it out. If they really give two hoots in the first place

And this way they do not have to ask :grin

And you are so right about knowing the difference between Blue Willow.. as my Aunts restaurant was called "The Willow Tree" and I grew up surrounded in tons of it, all pretty old too. Some of that also fetches a good price these days.. Still, the building was also old, dating from about the 1500's (not the age of the china..) :grin
