Welcome to St. Kitts!!!

CS499.jpg

I woke up at 6:30am hoping to catch another beautiful sunrise. As I lay in bed, I could feel the excitement building up for the day ahead. Over 40 cruises under my belt, and this was going to be my first visit to St. Kitts. I was really excited about the excursion I had booked through Carnival, called the Rail & Sail. It is a 2 hour train ride around the island, followed by a catamaran sailing along the coast.
As I made my way to the bathroom, I noticed that a piece of paper had been slipped under the cabin door.....

CS500.jpg

I was so disappointed. My only solace is that we'll be back here next August on the Carnival Breeze, so I can certainly book it again. My back up plan for today would be to join the roll call beach bums, and visit one of the beaches, so that's what I'll do. I stepped out on my balcony, looked forward, and saw that we had smooth seas once again.....

CS502.JPG

And yes, I did catch another beautiful sunrise!!

CS503.JPG

I went back to bed for another hour or so, then went back out onto the balcony to watch us as we approached St. Kitts. I never saw the top of that hill the entire time we were here!!

Another great set of photos, Jeff!
Glad to see you were having a great time during the cruise!

It's especially interesting to read about the ports I will visit during my next Caribbean cruise; St Thomas, St Kitts and St Maarten.
Waiting eagerly for the rest of your St Kitts adventure (sorry that your excursion was canceled) and later for St Maarten.

I remember some photos you showed when you were using those dive helmets in St Thomas. Is that something you would recommend?

Thanks Erik!! I will be finishing the St. Kitts segment tonight, then I'll be doing my Antigua segment, some of which I showed on my Addicts meet in Antigua thread, then will come St. Maarten.

I highly recommend the Helmet Dive at Coral World in St. Thomas. If you want to revisit those pictures, they are in my Carnival Dream album.

At 10am, I made my way down to the Lobby Bar to meet the roll call beach bums. There were only four of us today, as I guess the cloudy weather scared some people off. One person, who had been here before, recommended that we go to a beach that the locals hang out at. It's called the Shipwreck Beach Bar, and it's located on South Friars Beach. So off we go, and here I am leaving the ship.....

Here is the Cruise Terminal. The taxi stand is off to the right.....

CS556.JPG

We were able to get a taxi very quickly and we were off. The fare to South Friars Beach was $8 per person, round trip. That was very reasonable. We have arrived at the Shipwreck Beach Bar.

CS557.JPG

The beach itself was very, very, very, narrow, and made up of black sand. We paid $5 each for a lounger and a spot under a thatched umbrella. This was the view of the beach looking to the right......

CS558.JPG

And the view of the beach looking to the left.....

CS559.JPG

We soon had our first bucket of beer for $20.....

Here are a couple of views taken from my lounger. The water was rough and churned up. I did go in for a dip a couple of times, and there wasn't any undertow or anything like that....

CS564.JPG

CS565.JPG

The bartender at the beach bar told us that yesterday it was sunny and the water was calm, but that a storm had come through overnight and churned up the water. Occasionally, a wave would wash up all the way under our loungers, so we kept our belongings high and dry.....

CS566.JPG

Up on top of the hill, you could relax in a hammock.....

CS568.JPG

The Shipwreck Beach Bar had covered areas for drinking and eating. I had an order of the chili nachos, which tasted extremely good sitting and watching the water, and washing them down with a couple of beers....

Now it's time for a little monkey business. There are a lot of monkeys on St. Kitts. In fact there are more monkeys on this island than there are people. I think the number is 1.25 monkeys for every person. Many of the people keep them as pets, and some "monkey men" make a living by letting you hold and take pictures of the monkeys for a fee. These monkeys are the Green Vervet Monkeys, that the French brought here way back when, and they flourished and multiplied. Most of them are wild, and can be found virtually everywhere. A few of them came down the hill close to us, to check us out, and munch on the plants.....

A little before 3pm, we decided to head back to the ship. Since there were no taxis waiting, they gladly called a taxi for us. It came in about 10 minutes, and soon we were almost back at the ship.....
