Need help.. What do most people carry with them when they are on cruises travelers cheques or cash? Wife plans to take a few thousand dollars with us on our cruise so just trying to find out which is the safest way to travel.. We do not own any credit cards or plan to get any either.. Any advise would be helpful..

Thank you

Well if you don't have any credit cards then I would take traveller's checks. I only take enough cash for tips, taxi's and food until I get to the ship, everything else goes on my AMEX card and I pay it when I get home. I wouldn't advise taking huge amounts of cash off the ship with you. If you need cash you can always take your traveller's checks to the pursers desk and cash them.

Travelers Cheques for sure. We take them most of the time plus some cash to pay cabs, tips, etc. Once on the ship you can cash them in the casino or the guest relations desk.

Hi,

I would say put most of that in Travel's check and bring some cash. Thats what we did on our cruise in December on the Mariner. American Express Traveler's checks can be easily replaced and everyone excepts them anyway. Plus, it's a great way to stay on a budget when you have to take one of those checks to guest services to cash it out. Now, I am not saying you can't just pay with them straight out anywhere you go as you certainly can. But, I kept mine in my safe and only took them to guest services to cash out when I needed them...one at a time or whatever. Your need some cash on hand for tipping folks like room service, baggage handlers, incidentals etc.

Have fun!

We get travelers checks for free from AAA. If you pay for them with a AAA Visa card, there is no "cash advance" fee. We cash what we need at the pursers office. Any checks that are left when we get back are taken to the bank and put in our checking account and the Visa bill is paid with a check. Its like getting a loan for a month with no interest charge.

I don't understand where all these "free" services from AAA are. My local AAA office charges $9.95 for travelers checks. Also I read on another thread that AAA took someone's passport photos for free. My office charges $10 to take them. All this and the AAA office is 36 miles away. What is the benefit?
