Im going to my muster drill (LOL at the word muster ***MUST we attend it*** Could you please MUSTER the energy to go***)

Ive never cruised before. If others don't want to go, thats cool. Just make sure you are not IN MY WAY panicking, running around like a chicken with your head cut off if God forbid there is a fire or wreck. And, if its going to hold the whole ship up, just go to the dang mustard meeting.

LOL!

All Im saying is if it doesn't effect me, Im happy! Im going to learn how to put on my life vest!

Um Mike and Bec im not sure exactly what you meant by your last post... and I am a very nice person,, dont forget i went to bat for you when you posted about nude beached andnot being dead... sometimes when people type things it may not be interpreted as it was meant to be heard or read, so I am going to take your post with a grain of salt and just say , thank you I am a joy to be around,, and there are plenty of people on this board that do know me, and those are the ones i value the opinions of. :)

I have to say, Melissa...you handle things very well. Good for you. :) I guess it's all about that whole "more flies with honey" thing, huh? I wish everyone used that philosophy here.

Mizangel,

Congratulations, your thread has made it to page 3. Bet you didn't know how hot a topic this was (or is)?

I think that I am going to try to think of how I can entertain or enjoy myself at muster. I really like what bippytrip said about using a cigar to keep people away---however, I don't smoke. I guess the alcohol and one of my walmart portable chairs will have to do!!

Okay, this post is getting a lot of attention.

I know we all have our pet peaves. But check this out. My first cruise was last week, the drill only took twenty minutes. No big deal. Having the need to know as much as possible about this I contacted Carnival prior to leaving as well as a friend in the coast guard. I also talked to security on the Valor about this subject and this is the deal. THE DRILL IS MANDATORY FOR ALL PERSONS ON COMMERCIAL CRUISE LINERS. THIS IS REGARDLESS OF THE U.S. COAST GUARD REGULATIONS. NOT ALL SHIPS LEAVE PORT FROM A U.S. CITY AND THE DRILL STILL TAKES PLACE. NONE OF THE SHIPS ARE REGISTERED IN THE U.S. AND THE DRILL STILL "HAS" TO TAKE PLACE.
REASON: SIMPLE. INSURANCE: EACH AND EVERY CRUISE LINE MUST CARRY A MINIMUM OF INSURANCE TO PROTECT AGAINST LOSS, INJURY AND DEATH. PART OF THE *REQUIRMENT* TO KEEP THIER COVERAGE IS THE *MANDATORY* BOAT DRILL. THE CRUISE LINES ARE RANDEMLY SELECTED AND MONITORED FOR THE COMPLIANCE AND COMPLETENESS OF THIER DRILLS. (similar to secret shoppers) IF IT IS SEEN OR OBSERVED THAT A PARTICULAR SHIP IS NOT DOING EVERYTHING WITHIN ITS POWER TO INSURE THE SAFETY OF THIER PASSENGERS (ie boat drill) THAT SHIPS INURANCE WILL BE DROPPED AND PRIMIUMS FOR THE REMAINING FLEET ARE SUBJECT TO INCREASE OR NON-RENEWAL.
IN ADDITION: EACH SHIP AT THE CAPTAINS AND OR SAFETY OFFICERS DISCRESION CAN AND WILL REFUSE PASSAGE TO ANYONE COUGHT THAT REFUSES TO COMPLY. THE FINE PRINT WHEN YOU BOOK YOUR CRUISE WILL CLEARLY STATE THAT THE CRUISE LINE HAS SOLE AND FINALE DISCRESION REGARDING PASSANGER SAFETY.
So, is it really that big a deal to get cought giving a crew member a hard time when the end result can be waving goodbye from the docs because you have a bug up your (explitive). Bend over and take it like a man and move along to the frozen thingy maker.
In closing I would like thank all those that suck it up and cheers. =twobeer And for those who will still try to hide let me say: PARK YOUR BACKWOODS BUCKTOOTH (EXPLITIVE) IN A MOTEL 6 SOMEWHERE, CALL DOMINOES FOR A PIZZA, STICK YOUR FEET IN A COUPLE OF 5 GALLON BUCKETS FULL OF WATER, STICK YOUR STRAW IN YOUR BOTTLE OF MADDOG 20/20 OR NIGHTTRAIN AND MAKE ARM MOVEMENTS TO THE TRACTOR TRAILER DRIVERS AS THEY GO BY TO GET THEM TO BLOW THIER HORN. AND STAY OFF THE OPEN SEAS!!!!!!!!!! =bigwave

I don't get it, if the captain says we have to do it, isn't it mandatory?
I thought he was the "Master and Commander" or am I thinking of a movie???
By the way, what is 'competant'?

Guess I've missed out on some good topics, eh? Well I'm here now to put in my two cents. My first couple of cruises they didn't even have Muster Drills. I think it was my 3rd cruise when the Muster Drills started for Cruise Lines. And even then on my 3rd cruise my cousin and I were out wandering around the ship alone. And when they announced the Muster Drill we didn't have a clue what to do or what was going on. We just kept walking around and watching people, finally when we realized what was going on, we went to our cabin and by the time we go there, we're like okay this drill must be half over by now because there was like nobody in the halls or anything it was so quiet LOL so we're like lets not go. And so we didn't, we just sat on our beds and stayed quiet, a few minutes later, my dad walked in. LOL we're like oh crap. He saw us and said you guys didn't go to the drill either? we're like uh nope we didn't know what was going on until we thought it was too late. So the three of us stayed there until the drill was over. Oops LOL. But the next cruise I went, and we were one of the first ones there with our life Vests ON.... and NEVER AGAIN! Now whenever we go on a cruise, we carry our Life Vests, we take our time getting there and try to be one of the last ones there... (but not so late that we hold things up. There's always plenty of people coming in after we're already there) And we wait until we get there to put our Life Vests on! Out of all the Carnival Cruises i've been on and had the Muster Drill, not one of them did a roll call/attendance check. However on the Royal Caribbean's Grandeur of the Seas in 2000, they did do a roll call and marked who was in attendance.

I really have no opinion on whether or not it should be MANDATORY. I guess for First time Cruisers it may be a good idea, just so they know where to find their Muster Station. On my first cruise( of course I was young) I had no idea what a Muster Station even was, but then again maybe my dad did. But now that I've been on several cruises. I know to check the door on my cabin to find where my Muster Station is, and always check to make sure we have enough and the right size Life Vests. Call me silly, but I even check to see if the light is there and the whistle is there. Once I had no whistle on my vest so I asked for a different one LOL.

I must say that being that I am sitting here at my desk at work, I sure would like to be doing a muster drill right now, knowing that in a few minutes I would be leaving out to somewhere! Which does bring up a little gripe that I had about the Glory, they pulled out of port right as the Muster Drill was finishing up, we didn't get that chance to gather on the top decks and watch as we pull out, as well as having our eardrums blown out by the horn.

I kinda missed that...

I have done hundreds of fire/muster/abandon drills during my career, including survival suits. A few have been real, instead of a drill, and I decided on our first cruise that I will do no more. I know what to do when the time comes and recommend the drill to those who have not been to one.

WOW.....what a lot of opinions. I understand the need for the muster drill and all. I just think they should find a more pleasant way of doing it. I have only been on one cruise but was not impressed with the drill. There was nothing in the drill that I could not have figured out on my own. The people in my party got crammed in a back corner and when we tried to find a seat we got yelled at for sitting in the wrong spot...something about not being able to hear properly. I am not sure why I needed to move....I still couldn't hear the person speaking anyway.
I am sure they have their purpose. I just imagine there coulde be a better way of doing it.

= ) I do look forward to the cruise and the 15 to 20 minute drill will not ruin it I am sure.

This can be a new hot topic for discussion:

If it takes a mosquito with a wooden leg 1 hour to cut thru a bar of soap, how long would it take the rays of the sun to cover an outhouse?

Discuss!!!!!

Hey maybe if they handed out a free drink coupon for everyone that attends,,, more people would go... TWICE !!!!

Bibbytrip after alot of scratch paper i finally have an answer: 4.27854 Hours,,,, i used the cruisetracker and divided by how many people go to formal night, and then subtracted all those that smuggle booze, then add 2% for those that dont attend muster drill, and VOILA ... and you thought you were being tricky :)
