Well, well, well....maybe the Brit in Beryl fooled at least one of you with the statuary but she sweeped the board today. 1 for choosing the correct definition and 4 for those she conned with her bluff! Corky got one from KT. Gavin gets a point for the correct answer too!

Since rabid "fans" can be quite loud, boisterous and vocal about their passions...whether sport, art or entertainment form, famous person, political leaning or even cruiseline.... I'm going with the swaggering and boastful choice!

I've been thinking about this a lot and here's my take....winkles are little sea snails and you use a pinlike thing to pull them out of their shells (I know this because my Mom used to live by the shore in Nova Scotia where her father, my grandpa, was a fisherman.) When I was in my teens the fashion in shoes was very pointed toes. My Mom always called them winkle pickers. They were not the most comfortable shoes to wear and so I am ignoring the "pinny" part of this word and thinking strictly of the torture of wearing those shoes. I am choosing ...

......because it reminds me of the pinching of our toes when we wore those shoes my Mom called "winkle pickers"!

I waited for others to chime in before I aswered because I wanted to see some backstory on the answers. Beryl, I think I will agree with you based on your dialog. I hope you are not tricking me! KT is out of the hosue and didn't choose, Gavin agreed with Erik and took #2, and Bread said #1 sounds like something those northeasterners up in Maine might use . . . .
 
Tobyn...I would never try to fool you (or anyone) other than with my definition. It wouldn't work...I don't have a poker face and I also can't keep my mouth shut! You would know if I was trying to fool you!

#1....You use a very strong knife (or screwdriver) to open oysters...I have never heard an oyster shucker call their tool anything other than that.

#2....Funnel....a hybrid is the offspring of 2 distinct species...I know what a winkle is but I have never heard of anything out of the sea called a pinnie...but maybe there is!!

#3. The hook for pinnies sounds great but where does the winkle part fit in???

That left me with #4...the instrument of torture and I did really like my line of reasoning! We'll see who comes out with the correct answer!

I'm not sure which to choose...I'm waffling between #1 and #2 ...... think the brackish water is trying to get us to think of eels and wedding chapel is coming from the "moss" and trying to make our brains think mosque. So which of the others to choose????? I'll be back later with my choice!!

It's a delicacy and hard to find. Had it during a ferry cruise in the Baltic last year (the Baltic Sea is brackish water). Now I'm hungry... :biggrin:

I know I'm getting more absent minded but I swear there is a poltergeist at this computer desk...I put the definition card faithfully on top of the rest and cap the box until it's time to post the word and darned if the next day I can't find the card! I put the used ones to the back and thumb through..nope..I've had one turn up a few days later after having to google the definition, inside the box sideways as if it's slipped down from the top......oh well..unsolved mystery!
