My family had a favorite camping spot at Lake Wappapello in SE Missouri. We would go as often as Daddy could get away. One Memorial day, he asked his friend and his family, who lived across the street, to join us. He in turn, invited his brother and family. They camped next to us, and I sat and watched as this good looking guy put up their tent-upside down. He asked me later what was my first impression of him, and I said he reminded me of Jethro from the Beverly Hillbillies. It was funny, it turned out we had met about 8 years earlier, when he visited his sister who had moved in next to us.
We spent the next day together, then my Mom was taken ill and we had to rush home. As we were rushing to break camp, he came to our camper door and asked for my phone number. I didn't want to give it to him because I had been hurt recently and was not ready for another boyfriend. Mom dragged herself out of the bed, and hanging onto the sink cabinet grabbed a pencil and paper and said, JUst give it to him.
He called me a couple days later, and we dated for a couple weeks. Then he broke the news to me that he would like to go on dating, but he wanted me to know he was not looking for marriage. I was 18, I told him I was not ready for that, either. 6 weeks later we were engaged and married almost a year from the date we met.
I should have stuck to my guns, it lasted 13 years and that was that.
