Re: Help!! Roaches have taken over my kitchen!

All I can say now, is OY VEY!!! I just had my dinner, and I'm itching all over,

I have another story, when I was growing in Brooklyn, NY -- in a 4 family house. There were many roaches at times. We were very close with our neighbors, and they had 3 boys, I grew up with the oldest like we were brother and sister. My mom was a kidder, she always told them that we had better stuff then they had. One day, the youngest boy came in and my mom said there were roaches --- so to get back at her, he said (in baby talk) "vee dot bidder vons in mine house" LOL

I thought the big 1.5 inch bugs were Palmetto bugs - not water bugs. Water bugs here are about 1/2 inch and are black. Sorry can't suggest what to do about roaches as we only had 2 once and I called the exterminator. That was about 20 years ago. I can't imagine living in an apartment as I would be freaked out with the critters people can bring in. Good luck on getting rid of them.

Just a thought, has anyone else seen these? or are you the oinly one, Hmmmmm?? Are you sure you are awake when you go in the kitchen? Just asking, lol

Maureen, according to this site, cockroaches are also known as palmetto bugs or water bugs. Ugh!

About 15 years ago, my car was stolen. The young man who stole it (he was caught by a cop who saw him run a stop sign, chased him, and brought him to justice!) smoked a whole lot of pot and left the roaches in the ash tray. When I told one of the girls at work that the ask tray was full of roaches, she almost fell on the floor in disbelief! MY CAR HAD ROACHES! She was so horrified! How did roaches get in there?

I had to explain what that kind of a roach was! LOL! (BTW, I only know what I see in the newspapers!)

I should have clarified conniecat........if you live in a mobile home in the south, roaches are a big problem. The hot, humid weather here is a breeding ground for roaches and they thrive on it.........unfortunately!

GloBug....that story is just too funny!

Nieciez.........I plan on doing almost everything you suggested.........except....the dog food thing. I just can't do that to my furbaby. He's living on borrowed time as it is (he's 15.....will be 16 in November) and as I've mentioned before, he's blind and deaf. He eats a little bit a few times a day and I will not deprive him of that for the time he's left on this earth with me. I just can't do that to him.

Last night, I went to Kroger and got me a package of the roach bait thingies (there are 12 in a package). I cleaned the cabinet above my refrigerator (I won't even gross you out with what I found up there), the cabinet above my stove (again I won't gross you out), and under the sink. I used all 12 bait things in those three areas. I've never kept anything above the fridge or the stove (too high for me to reach and cabinets too small to fit hardly anything), so at least there were no dishes or anything like that up there. I looked for Boric Acid but couldn't find any. Where would one find this stuff.......in what isle in the store?

I'm determined to get this problem under control! I'm taking off work this Friday and the Tuesday after Labor Day. So I will have 5 days to rage war against these things!

Try at least to put the food up at night when it's dark...that is when the critters come "out" of hiding and are more likely to feed on pet food.

I was telling you about the base housing we were assigned that had a bad roach problem. As any military wife will tell you when you vacate base housing you go through a white glove inspection. When we took possession of this house the unit looked spotless but we had this roach problem. After about 6 weeks of this problem for some reason I pulled out the gas stove. OMG behind this stove was filthy and under the stove the floor was awfully greasy and there was a half dozen or so nuggets of large chunk dry dog food and a greasy straw trivet. It was after I cleaned up that mess that I finally got control of the roach problem. Usually when you vacate the house for final inspection the stove must be pulled out...whoever did the final inspection on this unit really dropped the ball!.

Nieciez..........I can only imagine what's under my stove and fridge! I've lived there for 11 years and I know it hasn't been moved in that time. And who knows how long before that it was moved........if ever!! My apartment complex was built in the early 60s and for all I know, the appliances have been unmoved for that long. And I certainly don't have the strength to move them, and even if I could....the kitchen is so narrow that you could not pull them all the way out before hitting the other side (countertop, sink, dishwasher, etc.). If above my stove and fridge were disgusting..........I can only imagine what it looks like under there!!

Oh Ruchela........I'm so sorry! If it was about bugs.....it wasn't a dream....it was a nightmare!!!

Nite Star....you have just put your finger on your problem! Hire someone to come and move and clean under your kitchen appliances!! They got them in there so there must be a way to move them out one at a time to clean under them!!

Gee.........if I wait about a week, I may not have to worry about the roaches. Hurricane Gustav may come along and blow my apartment building away! :lol Seriously though...........sometimes I think the entire complex is being held together very precariously. It's a small complex that only has 64 apartments and hasn't been maintained all that well through the years and is now approaching 46 yrs. old. Parts of it look like one good stiff wind could knock it down! :lol

When I was a kid and lived in San Diego we had ongoing roach problems. Whenever I had to go into the kitchen at night I would always wear my slippers and be armed with an extra shoe in my hand and would be ready to smash as many as possible when the light went on. LOL. Of course, then I had to clean the whole counter top and mop the floor before I went back to bed. My Mom finally got one of those devices that you plug into the wall and that seemed to work great. Hadn't seen one in almost 20 years now. I get those giant black Japanese roaches that breed in the sewer system and they love my flower beds. So we spray around the outside of the house often. I also found that Roach Motel brand of bug catchers works great for the occasional ones that get into my home. I place them everywhere, in as many corners as possible (and next to the front/back doors and all over the garage) , and replace them every couple months. I know they can easily enter your home in the brown paper grocery bags, so I NEVER use paper, always plastic.

Did you know they love to nest in the top pleats of your curtains? Maybe it would be a good idea to take all the curtains down and wash them or have them cleaned. I would take them outside when I took the pleating hooks out and shake them on the lawn and then vacuum them well before you bring them back inside.

Good luck, hugs Mari

And they also like to nest in thermostates...I was also the COR on the HVAC contract for family housing and I can't tell you how many thermostates that had to be replaced by my contractor due to damage from the roaches!

They also, as I have learned the hard way, like to nest in the cord storage areas on small appliances!!
