I've seen the post about men and tuxedos on formal nights. I have a question about ladies on formal nights. I'm going on the Nordic Empress Bermuda cruise in 2 weeks. I've never been on a cruise and have been told different stories regarding what type of clothing to wear on a formal night. Is it ball gown, black cocktail dress, a gown, but nothing too poofy? What? I've been told everything to a simple black dress to glittery...Thanks in advance!

On the last cruise I went on (Carnival Pride) on one formal night I wore the bottom of my junior prom dress (it was one of those 2 piece ones) w/ a sparkly top, and the other night I wore a sparkly black cocktail dress.

On the Serenade in November I plan to wear my senior prom dress (strapless, black & white w/ some rhinestones, A-line) one night, and another black cocktail type dress.

It depends on what you are comfortable in. I like to dress up when possible, as in college I pretty much live in jeans etc...

I have seen women in nice pant suits to decked out in ball gowns. As long as you look nice and are comfortable, wear what you want.

thanks so much for your response! i have a bunch of gowns from college and from law school formals - some simple, yet elegant - and would love to get a chance to wear them again. i just didn't want to be too over/under dressed!

You will not be overdressed as there are many who really enjoy dressing up for these evenings, myself included!

I always bring long gowns for formal nights and one of my favorite things to do is get ready for dinner early and find a seat in m favorite watering hole - that would be the Champage Bar - and admire all the well dressed passengers as they go by.

So wear your finery and enjoy!

We have been on seven cruises, including the Nordic Empress, and for formal nights I usually wear a cocktail dress or dressy pantsuit and my husband wears a tuxedo. I don't see as many long dresses or "ball gowns" as I used to see even ten years ago; just dressier clothes than what people wear the other nights.

My husband is a retired AF Coloel..and he wears h is formal mess dress one night and a Tux the other formal night. In between he wears smart Casual. I wear anything I damn well am in the mood for..always formal..as we enjoy dressing up. I see ladies in every degree of wear..inc. those who do not bother. I see sequins, satins, old, new, shiny , spangled and boas...it is a night for all to come as they wish. There really is no protocol. It is a wonderful opportunity to get out of the drive by fast food lane...and enjoy fine dining, dancing and the rememberance of dignity and elegance.
