My husband wants to book our excursion through Carnival but I don't want to miss out! Do they sell out fast through the ship? This is about the only thing I want to do! Thanks in advance!

I would highly recommend an independent tour with Captain Marvins, or one of the other well known tour companies... but if you insist on going with a ships tour, yes book online ahead of time. It WILL sell out.

I also recommend going with an independent tour company. You get much more for less than you will pay through the cruise ship. We just got back from Grand Cayman and Stingray City, and used Captain Bryan's. They were wonderful...I highly recommend them. Don't miss out on it...it was a wonderful experience!

....also the ship's tours are packed with people. You'll have 20-30 people on an independant tour versus 2 or 3 times that with the ship.

With Captain Marvins last year, we had 12 people on out boat.... personal and very nice compared to hundreds (literally) on the ships tour.

See my description of captain marvin in 04/04/04 Carnival Paradise review and Lizardstew's captain marvin story in the thread on "Back from Paradise" on community message board- older messages.

We went in December with Nativeway - www.nativewaywatersports.com - and had a wonderful time. For the 2 1/2 hour trip to Stingray City and Coral Gardens it was $25 (up to $30 in 2004) and was well worth the price. Pick up at the pier, great service, nice boat. We're going back to G.C. with our daughter and my sister this December and have booked with them again.

Forgive the naivete, but how do you find the numbers for the other local tour operators? And how far in advance do you purchase? What happens if there is something that happens and your ship doesn't go to that port (Happened to me last time)?

With Captain Marvin's, you book online, but you don't pay until you arrive. If your ship cancels the port, you do not get charged. I suspect that is the policy with all of the independant tour operators, but check before you book.

It is Capt Marvins policy (as mentioned above) to not charge you until you get there, and if your ship has to skip the port, they still will NOT charge your card for not showing up. They understand these situations. But if you choose another company, make sure you ask in an email so that you get a written response back. There are several reputable companies now.... use a search engine and look up Grand Cayman travel or vacation information .... or look specifically for Captain Bryans (or Brians?), NativeWay, Sotos... theres a bunch. Sounds like just about everyone is happy with their tours.
