I have a question regarding my 20 year old daughter....I don't mind if she has a beer now and then as long as she is responsible..(and i know it will happen anyway)
I have heard different things....

Someone told me over 18 can have beer & wine but no hard liquor.
Someone else told me nothing unless they are 21...
And finally I heard nobody on the cruise ever checks.. However I would not feel comfortable with that....

Anybody know for sure????

Also, we are going with another couple, 4 kids total..the others are young teens.... Someone told me walkie talkies are a must to keep track of your kids....

Any thoughts on that??????

And finally.............Does anyone know if the Miracle has a basketball court?

Re: BEER AND A 20 YEAR OLD! Also a Miracle question.

Yes the Miracle has a basketball court. When are you going? We'll be on it July 3rd. We are planning on bringing walkie talkies for my boys so I can keep track of them. I think you can also rent them on board but I don't know how much $$$. Can't help you with the alcohol questions, but i'm sure someone else will.

My son will be thrilled about the basketball..

Re: BEER AND A 20 YEAR OLD! Also a Miracle question.

carnivals rule is 21 to drink any alcohol... royal carribean is 18 and up can drink beer and wine.. 21 to drink liquor.... also on carnival if you are under 21, it is coded into your sail and sign card that your are under 21 and the bar tender will see it pop up on the screen when they swipe your card.. also I think the under 21 cards look different as well

hope this helps

Thanks madison. That clears up all the differences...My cousin cruises all the time on RC....My daughter will have to just deal with it!

yes, the s&s card for minors and under 21 is a different color.

Why don't you just order for her? That way you also know exactly what and how much she is drinking. I do this for my kids 18,19 and 20. I also pick the champagne off the trays during captains gala and give them a glass. That way I am serving them and not the ship. I have done this with wine at dinner as well. Even gave my 14 year old daughter a small glass of wine too. Not enough to make a real difference but made her feel more grown up and helped make the night special.

As the drinking issue has been covered I'll address the use of Walkie Talkies. First of all, they are NOT a "must." They don't take the place of parental oversight. They are more obnoxious than cell phones to others around you because we are forced to hear both sides of the conversation. Cell phones are bad enough, making us listen to only one side.
Noise on the decks makes people think they have to shout into the radios, making their use even more irritating to others. I think they can be very useful for critical communications but not for random check ins. I would insist that my teens meet me at appointed spots at certain time intervals. If their plans change, they would have to come to me and let me know.
When you tell your teen that you'll be in the casino until 1:00 while she roams the ship you are placing her in an unsafe situation. Anyone within earshot, and everyone else who has a radio on that frequency now knows your plans and that makes the teen vulnerable. Assaults on ships are not all that rare.
If you really think you can't get by without the radios, have a talk with your group on the proper and courteous use of them...Keep the volume down (the radio AND your voice) especially in your cabin. Never use them in the dining room or theater. Keep conversations short. If there is a problem, have them come to you to discuss it so you can keep the noise down and the frequency clear for others to use.
Basically, just be courteous and aware of other around you.
Have a great trip! Two days to go for me!

You have to be 21 on Carnival, but the islands are different. Might be even 16 on some?

Sodey

You sound like an excellent parent and you kids sound like they are becoming RESPONSIBLE adults.

Sodey,
You have earned my respect as a good parent! I wish there were more and more parents like yourself on ships. Maybe the message will get through to others who are not as responsible as you are! I'll sail with you ANY DAY...and your kids too!

Come and join me on the Glory 8/21! There will be 11 of us going this time. 4 Parents (40 somethings) and 7 kids 13 to 21. We can't wait!

Don't you think America really needs to change their drinking age? It's 19 in most of Canada (18 in Alberta, last I checked, been a few years.. heh). I couldn't imagine .. being 20, deciding to go on a cruise with a friend, then not be able to drink!! Craziness!

Good thing im pushing 30, and wont have that problem on the Inspiration in August ;)

=gulp

I gave up drinking to get buzzed when I was 30. I have just as much fun, maybe more than the people who get smashed, and I remember all the fun I had the next day...and I never have to make love to "the porcelain god", and I get invited to all the best parties because everybody wants a designated driver!;)

fiOna,

Why does America have to change it's drinking age policy to get in line with Canada and the rest of the world? Maybe Canada should get in line with America, I think.

I happen to like the current 21 age rule. Of course I'm 33 and don't drink!

In response to SODEY's reply, just to let you know it is against the law to furnish alcohol to minors. It surprises me that a parent would provide it to their children as young as 14. I know you may not think this is a big deal, but it is. Here is the state of Florida, you could be fined up to $500.00 and 6 months in jail (yes even a parent). I guess what I am trying to say is be carefull who you broadcast this type of information to.

If that was true, they would have to arrest every pastor and priest during communion!

The problem with totally denying your children any alchohol at all until 21 is that when they finally do drink, they drink to excess because they have no experience and they are finally free from that parental bondage. There is nothing wrong with giving my daughter a small glass of wine. Actually when each turned 13 (my kids) I took them out to a fancy restaurant of their choice. (one on One) I talked about love, marriage, etc.. and gave them a ring to remind them of what love is really all about between two people. I then gave them a small glass of wine with their meal. Kids today want their parents to trust them. Trust to them means freedom. I'll take my chances with the law.
