My DW and I have done 6 Alaska cruises. All round trip Vancouver BC. We’ve done 2 cruise tours starting in Anchorage and then sailed southbound to Vancouver. We will be doing another cruise and cruise tour this coming August. We have done Alaska on both Celebrity and Princess. We were happy with both lines and Holland America does Alaska very well. I don’t think you could go wrong with any of these lines. If you need to save some money, usually it’s less expensive to sail to Alaska out of Seattle.
Princess does an excellent job in Alaska. The start of August is still part of the rainy season. Mid August it will start to dry up however the days will start to shorten and the temps will start to drop. The wildlife will still be seen easily. There are many different routes to take I personally prefer the longer routes of 10 or 14 days.
Basically . Three options: Seattle or Vancouver departures and return. #2. One way from same ports and fly home from the North or visa versa. #3. a longer cruise from further south. Seattle vs Vancouver: Few if any cruises from Seattle use the inside route between Vancouver Island and the mainland and you spend most of your time at sea until well into Alaska. Leaving and especially returning into Vancouver is more scenic. Air into Seattle is less expensive. Canadian Dollar is @ 30% discount. Mainly 7 day voyages but you can find longer trips. Canada Place is close to downtown in Vancouver Two docks in Seattle ( depends on your cruise line) one is not walkable at all and the other is not great. Both cities have core issues with unhoused, drug and mental health persons in areas you would be wise to refrain from entering. Both cities have great scenery in the surrounding area. Vancouver gets the nod for easier access.
I would also look seriously at cruises leaving Seward and try to stay an extra few days there at either the start or end of your cruise. There are some amazing day trips on offer from Seward which we greatly enjoyed. I see that several lines running itineraries from Seward presently - perhaps Royal Caribbean is a good place to start? https://www.royalcaribbean.com/gbr/en/cruise-from/seward-alaska
