This is only my 2nd cruise. (our 1st was on the monarch (r.c.) to ensenada. We enjoyed it immensely ! We are now booked on a AAA group cruise on Carnival's Pride to the Mex riviera. We are very excited as we will have a balcony room this time around.( We are 8a gaurantee) (hope that is the proper term) Any sugestions or ideas would be GREATLY appreciated !! We are not sure which excursions to book. It is for 4 adults. We do not want to do any snorkeling or the likes. Any suggestions? Also.... on the Royal, we checked in a soft side ice chest with soft drinks and beer. We had no problem. We also had a couple bottles of wine in our luggage. How does Carnival handle these issues ?
Thanks So Much...

As long as your alcohol is checked in and not carried on you should be fine. Carnival does allow wine and soda to be carried on within a reasonable amount.

Sorry- I cant help you with excursions.

You can go to Carnival's website (www.carnival.com) and click on "Shore Excursions" then "Mexican Riviera" then each port destination to see what's available.

Puerto Vallarta is a charming town of cobblestoned streets and lots of shopping and oceanfront restaurants and bars. If you want to get outside of town, I recommend going south to Chico's Paradise and/or Chino's Paradise. These are places where rivers come down off the mountains and form waterfalls and pools to swim in (each has a restaurant overlooking). Of course, each looks very different depending on the time of year and how much rain they've had. To get there you can rent a Jeep or even hire a taxi driver--but make a "deal" with him for the entire trip (don't let him drop you off there because it's hard to get a cab back!!). I checked out the Carnival website and couldn't find an excursion that explicitly mentions these places but they may be included in their "jungle tours."

If you're just hanging around in Puerto Vallarta and want a GREAT experience, have a cab take to you to Chez Helena, then climb the stairs up, up, up to their "El Nido" Bar. It's on the rooftop overlooking all of Puerto Vallarta and is fantastic. Last time I was there I could even see whales in the distance.

Mazatlan--I've never really found anything much to do there. You can either go out to El Cid (which is a nice hotel) and lay on their beach and have lunch, or go to Senor Frog's and watch (or participate!) in getting crazy. There is, however, a really beautiful expansive beach there.

Los Cabos--the stop there is really brief and they "tender" you in (the ship doesn't dock so you have to go to shore by boat). If you take an excursion there, I'd recommend one of the cruises; or else just do some shopping at the pier or in town.

P.S. The Pride is a great ship in my opinion.

This is a little tidbit of info, not just for the pride, but for any balcony room. Bring a bungy cord to hold your door to the deck open. 1. The rooms tend to get really cold when closed up all the time and 2. it's so great to hear the water while you're in bed.........plus the chairs they provide are a pain to put in front of the door.

The main thing I remember about our Mex. Riv. cruise was that merchandise/souveniers in Cabo San Lucas were almost twice as much as in both Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta. (I had trouble bargaining them down to where the prices started in Maz. & PV.) You may want to keep that in mind when planning your shopping. PV had some wonderful shops just off the pier....hardly had to bargain - just ask the price and if you don't like it start to walk out....they lower it until you can hardly refuse to buy it. We started at the back - never made it to the front because we got such wonderful deals in the back. Mazatlan was very similar, too.

In Mazatlan we took the Sierra Madre Tour; in Puerto Vallarta we took the Eden Jungle Paradise AM tour, and in Cabo we took the Coastal Highlight Tour. Of the three the Coastal Highlight Tour was probably our least favorite although it did give us a general overview of the area...so if it was our first time we'd do it again. They had the best handmade white corn tortillas on the Eden Jungle tour....in fact I left a good portion of my chicken because I wanted to fill upon the wonderful tortillas. We also had an excellent lunch on the Sierra Madre tour as well. I highly recomment both of those tours....and if you want a general overview of Cabo then I recommend that one as well.

Of the nine cruises we have been on this one remains our favorite thus far.

We did the Ensenada Cruise in January on Ecstasy. We love is as well. We are going Sept. 19 on the Pride to Mexico. We originally did the 8a Guarantee and found out that they upgraded us to 8H (room 8205) and then we noticed that our rate went down so I called and they offered me a shipboard credit of $110.00 which I accepted and then found out that they downgraded us to deck 4. They showed me. I was so upset that I paid for an upgrade to a cat 8c (extended balcony). Oh well, live and learn. I am so excited. I will let you know how it goes and give you suggestions when we get back. Happy sailing!!!
