First of all you have to understand that here in St Louis, we don't get a lot of snow. Maybe one big snow per winter, say 6 inches. More than that brings panic. Right now, the city is practically at a standstill.

Various amounts are being reported, but at my house I have about 9-10 inches of snow. (I am about 15 miles SW of the city) We had sleet and freezing rain first yesterday. This is nuts! They said a lot of the problem is that we got 5 inches in an hour, Some areas have had thunder and lightning, too, but I missed it. Highways are shut down, 70 at 270 is at a standstill. There are wrecks everywhere. Some have even lost electricity. They are urging people to stay home. I am.

Should go to Dr for my knee, but I am not going anywhere, had a kid clean the driveway for me cheap, but still!!!

One reporter just said the it took him 55 minutes from Clayton to get to the station, normally a 7 minute drive.. Hills are impossible.
People are stuck sitting still on highways. We don't usually carry emergency snow kits in cars, these people are hungry and cold and can't go anywhere. Some places the snow has stopped, it is still very heavy here. A traffic report on TV said even the good highways are travelling at 30 mph tops. The snowplows and emergency vehicles can't even get through.

The channel 2 news came on at 4:30 and have been on nonstop. (This is the link to the local news if you would like to see http://www.myfoxstl.com/myfox/)

One woman is giving a report of being on a highway where it has taken her over an hour to go less than a mile, and has been in park on the highway for over an hour.

I have friends who live 90 miles west of here. They have a dusting on the ground. Strange.

They have just said that the snow is winding down, maybe a couple hours left, but then we are going to get 30-35 mph winds in a little bit.

Scrapbook Lady just emailed me from the Caymans. I told her to be glad she is out of this.

Connie, we have only had about half that here in Staunton although just recently the flakes seem to be larger. You must be in one of those heavy pockets. DH called me around noon from the Alton area and he said they had a lot more than we had. He will be home later, have to see what he says about the difference. I have to leave work soon and I don't look forward to getting out to my cold car.

Connie...your pics bring back memories...were you living in that area in 83 when the big unexpected snow storm dumped up to 16 inches in some areas?? I was visiting my grandma over in Belleville, had just planned on staying one night...the storm hit just as it was getting dark and we woke up to ...well...what you just described...had my camera with me and took some cool pics that I hope never to expierence again...anyway...spring is just around the corner so hang in there :)

I remember that snow very well. We had around 20 inches and they didn't clear our road for a few days. We walked to my parents and the drifts were up so high DH had to pull me thru. What a snow that was, one I hope never to see again!

DH got home, Alton has had more than us he said. We still have about 5-6 inches but it sounds like the St Louis area is a mess.

Whimsy...what I remember most about that 83 snow was walking 2 miles to the closest open store in those huge drifts and trying to carry groceries back (my grandma was amost out of food BEFORE it snowed )....and all the locals comming out trying to get me to buy cigarettes for them...( guess they were opposed to the walk )...the walk was hard on me at 23...at my age now I'd probably still be out there...our small part of missouri missed this snow...guess we're lucky :)

Weather like that is to be enjoyed in the comfort of one's home. Glad that you're inside and can watch the winter wonderland in safety.

Stay safe, connie....

Your pictures look like a typical day here in Michigan. We are getting another 5-8 iches of new snow tonight. :(

I know those daffodils are hiding under there somewhere :daisy

hillbillycruiser, Yes I lived here in during the Big One. We lived at the end of a dead end road. The plow did not get down there for 2 weeks, I couldn't get my car out until then. Fortunately we also had a Chevy Blazer. We did not have a TV at the time, and were playing Scrabble all night, and had no idea what we going on outside, but we laughed when we heard the thunder snow. Woke up and went to feed the dog, and Surprise! 14 inches of snow. The dog loved it, he would tunnel under it, roll over and chase snowballs. It really did bring St Louis to a halt. We took the Blazer and went to Webster Groves to dig my parents out. We went down Manchester Road,(major road) and people were skiing down the street. We even stopped and pulled a tow truck out of a ditch! People were snowed in for a long time.

Our snow here has stopped, we got about another inch. They finally plowed my street. I can't see it from here, but the last time when they plowed they left a huge mound in front of my driveway. Oh, well, this is really fun if you don't have to go out!

That snow, I believe it was '82, caught everyone off guard. They forecasted only an inch or two and we got 20. We were playing cards with friends and had no idea how much it had snowed. When they were leaving around 1 AM we had to help push them out, it had snowed so much already. We were caught without much in the way of groceries as well. It was about a mile to my mothers, I would of been 20 at the time. I remember the news calling out to those who had 4 wheel drives to help bring medical personnel into the hospitals and such. It was quite an experience. We also walked to a local restaurant that stayed open 24 hours. The waitress and cook couldn't go home and the other help couldn't get in so they were there, stuck.

Stay warm Connie. As much trouble as it causes, you have to admire the beauty of a snowfall. Especially before they start plowing it.

Very Pretty Connie if I could stay home I wouldn't care. That is the storm that hit us on Sunday. It was a blizzard here but now it is all gone. Tonight another storm with strong winds continuing, today it was hard to stay on our feet. They can't predict the snow well here because of that big pile of rocks called the Rockies which tends to divert the snow one way or another. But they say anywhere from 1-5. When it falls we know how much. :grin

Love the photos of the snow! We rarely get snow around here, but when we do, I LOVE to stand outside on the porch after dark and listen to the wonderful SILENCE!!! Nothing quite like it... so snuggle in with a good book, a hot beverage and those sweet cuddly furbabies, and have a great night!!

I love those pictures of the snow! We just got back from a weekend in Mammoth...it was truly amazing and for a few minutes it makes you feel like you're no longer in CA. After I get the pictures on to my laptop I will post some.

Stay warm!

Do the cats go crazy when it snows?
