My wife and I leave in a few days on out trip up the Nile River. We are sailing on Uniworld cruise line after a few day in Cairo. Has anybody done a trip like this?

No, but if you are treating, we are free ;)

That sounds like a great itinerary.
We would like it if you would do updates as you cruise along.

Great trip!

We flew 11 hours on British Airways from LA to London and then 5 more hours to Cairo Egypt. The city of Cairo is huge with very dense living conditions and with average of less than 2.5 inches of rain a year the buildings are filthy. Driving is crazy as nobody stays in their lane and everybody is honking. We see 3 adult men riding on motorcycles and people running across the road and nobody stops for them. We check into the 4 Seasons Hotel and have a great room on the 28th floor.

5AM the 20+ Mosques near the hotel start the call to prayer and our day begins. The Egyptian pound lost half of its value in the last few months so the beautiful breakfast buffet in the 4 Seasons is only $7.00. We are on a Uniworld Cruise and and we start with 1 day in Cairo before we fly to Luxor. In Cairo we see the Alabaster Mosque and the Egyptian Museum. They are building a new huge museum by the pyramids but it's years behind schedule and with the crash of the Egyptian pound I don't see it opening for a long time.

We take a 1 hour flight to Luxor board our buses to the SS Sphinx and they upgraded us to a grand suite. The boat has an all male crew of 60 and they can't do enough to make the 71 passengers happy. We see the Temple of Karnak and get our first experience with the sellers of Egyptian goods. (made in China)

We sail the rest of the day in cold and windy conditions and the shoreline is full of life. Water buffalo, cattle, donkeys and birds are at the water edge. Children rush from their small mud brick homes to wave to the boats. Banana, date, rice and clover farms on both sides of the river Nile. We tie up for the night and the next day we see the Temple Hathor and Luxor.

We sail to the Temple Kom Ombo the next day and this Temple is only a short walk from the boat so we no buses today. The sellers of souvenirs here were a real pain. They were in our face and followed you all the way to the Temple and were waiting for your return. At every place you go you will see the same junk and its all made in China.

Over the next few days we see the Temple of Abu Simble, Temple of Khnum, Aswan Dam and the Luxor Temple.

After 8 days on the Nile we fly back to Cairo and we go to see the great Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx.

Most of the time we had armed security on the bus and police escort. Every Temple had a x ray machine for your bags with nobody looking at the monitor. :) I never felt unsafe on our trip and would highly recommend Uniworld. I did see other boats doing the same thing we did so you do have options.
