Gustav Dumps On Haiti
Tom Moore, and Mark Avery, Lead Meteorologists, The Weather Channel
11:20 p.m. ET 8/26/2008
Gustav, with 70 mph sustained winds, made landfall on the southwest peninsula of Haiti Tuesday afternoon. Torrential rain continues to fall over Haiti. At least one death was reported due to a landslide. Gustav weakened to a tropical storm from its time over Haiti, but now that it's moving back over water, is expected to reintensify to hurricane strength.
[snip]
As of 11 p.m. EDT, the center of Gustav was located about 85 miles west of Port Au Prince, Haiti, or about 150 miles southeast of Guantanamo, Cuba. Gustav was moving toward the west-northwest at 8 mph. A turn toward the west is expected on Wednesday, with a return to a west-northwest motion expected on Thursday. Gustav is expected to move close to or between Jamaica and southeastern Cuba during this timeframe.
Gustav may emerge into the Gulf of Mexico by the weekend and could reach the US Gulf Coast by Labor Day. All US interests along the US Gulf Coast should pay particular attention to this potentially dangerous storm !!
[snip]
Hurricane warnings remains in effect for the Cuban provinces of Guantanamo, Santiago de Cuba, and Granma. Hurricane warnings are also in effect for Haiti from the southern border with the Dominican Republic northward to Le Mole St. Nicholas.
Hurricane watches are posted for Haiti from Le Mole St. Nicholas to the northern border with the Dominican Republic; the Cuban provinces of Las Tunas and Holguin; Jamaica; and the Cayman Islands.
Elsewhere, the remnants of Fay continue to inundate much of the Southeast and southern Appalachians. The low that was formerly Fay is centered in southeastern Tennessee and is tracking to the northeast. Flood watches remain posted for the eastern half of Tennessee and portions of the western Carolinas. Isolated tornadoes remain a threat.
In the open Atlantic Ocean, two other areas are being monitored for tropical cyclone development. One is located several hundred miles east-northeast of the Leeward Islands, and the other is just southwest of the Cape Verde Islands
