Good evening, @ddicts. Fay is still in the picture!

Some Changes Ahead

Northeast

A cold front will approach the Northeast on Friday. With remnant moisture from former Tropical Storm Fay in place, look for the eruption of showers and thunderstorms across Upstate New York and the Mid-Atlantic.

High temperatures on Friday will hold mostly in the 70s.

The cold front will weaken this weekend as it moves into a ridge of high pressure.

Look for scattered showers closer to the East Coast on Saturday but Sunday will be mainly dry.

A warm and dry pattern will take hold by early next week.

South

The core of the South will be dry on Friday but showers and thunderstorms will be scattered around the western and northern flanks.

This activity will stretch from western Texas and Oklahoma, through northern Arkansas and Tennessee, to North Carolina.

High temperatures Friday will range from the 80s in the Carolinas to the upper 90s in north-central Texas.

[size=large]All eyes are on Tropical Storm Gustav as it is expected to become a hurricane and enter the Gulf of Mexico this weekend. Gustav may make a run at the US Gulf Coast by Monday night or Tuesday.[/size]

Tropical Storm Hanna in the western Atlantic is no threat to any land masses in the near future.

[snip]

Midwest

Showers and thunderstorms from Michigan, down to the Ohio Valley, and back to the central Plains compliments of a cold front.

High temperatures will range from the 70s in the Upper Midwest to near 90 in southwest Kansas.

The weekend will be mainly dry, but south-to-southwest winds will on the increase over the Plains.

A cold front may edge into North Dakota Sunday with a few thunderstorms.

High temperatures will move into the 90s in the Dakotas ahead of the front.

West

A cold front is on the way from the Pacific and will trigger showers over western Washington on Friday.

Meanwhile, a lingering upper-level disturbance will continue to pop isolated-to-scattered thunderstorms in parts of Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona.

Highs will range from the warm 80s across the lower elevations of Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico to the broiling 110s in the Desert Southwest and well over 100 in the Central Valley of California.

On Saturday, the cold front will continue to move into the Northwest.

Ahead of the front highs will peak in the 90s in eastern Montana, but behind the front afternoon temperatures will only be in the 50s, 60s and 70s across Washington.

Highs will range from the 40s and 50s in Montana and Wyoming in the wake of the cold front to the 90s in the Desert Southwest.

The northern Rockies will turn much colder by early next week and snow will fall in the highest elevations.

Watching Gustav and Hanna

Tom Moore, Lead Meteorologist, The Weather Channel

The overall weather pattern is ripe for tropical development as we move into the climatological peak of the hurricane season.

[snip]

Tropical Storm Gustav strengthened overnight and continues to show organization. The storm is slamming Jamaica in the Caribbean. Maximum sustained winds are now 70 mph and it may reach hurricane status on early Friday. Interaction with Jamaica may slow any rapid development for awhile, but once Gustav goes back over water watch for rapid intensification.

As of 8 p.m. EDT, the center of Gustav was centered about 15 miles west of Kingston, Jamaica, and was moving to the west at 7 mph. The center of Gustav is likely to track over southern Jamaica through the night and then clear Jamaica on early Friday and then head for the Caymans.

[snip]

Jamaica is experiencing torrential rain and the threat for flash flooding will be high over Jamaica through tonight, along with gusty winds and high surf. Some locations may see from 10 to 20+ inches. This could lead to mudslides and dangerous flooding.

Gustav is now moving slowly westward. During the course of the next few days, it will turn to a west-northwest then northwest direction.

As we move toward the weekend, Gustav is forecast to intensify after passing over Jamaica. It will likely be at hurricane strength as it approaches the Cayman Islands later Friday and all residents should be preparing now.

[snip]

[size=large]Gustav is then forecast to enter the Gulf of Mexico over the weekend, and continue tracking northwest or north. It could threaten some part of the US Gulf Coast by Labor Day.[/size]

[snip]

[size=large]There is still some uncertainty regarding Gustav's future strength; which will likely be fine tuned based on what happens today. It is forecast to be a hurricane as it tracks through the Gulf of Mexico; possibly a major one. All interests along the Gulf Coast should pay very close attention to this potentially dangerous storm.[/size]

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Hanna has developed in the western Atlantic.

[snip]

The tropical storm is centered about 260 miles northeast of the Leeward Islands with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph.

Hanna is forecast to track northwest into the weekend and become a hurricane by Sunday or Monday. Fortunately, at that point, it will be located well northeast of the Bahamas. It does not appear to be of any threat to land in the near future, but Hanna will need to be closely monitored beyond this weekend and during the majority of next week.

[snip]

Elsewhere in the Atlantic Basin, a tropical wave was also located a few hundred miles west of the Cape Verde Islands. It remains disorganized for now, but it may begin to organize in the next few days. It will continue to be monitored as it moves westward.

Another area of strong convection is located in the southern Bay of Campeche. This activity is too close to land for any rapid development.

Good morning Mary Ann and Pucci. I see that the season is now in full swing, and we aren't even at the peak yet. The furbabies are up and out in the yard keeping the squirrels busy and the birds happy at the feeders.
