Good evening, @ddicts. Charles, your furry friend, Pucci, is doing his best to give you and Margaret nice weather for your land cruise or, at least, for your flight. Have a great time!

A little odd for August

Northeast

A dome of unseasonably chilly air aloft will combine with daytime heating to bring unsettled weather to parts of the Northeast right through the coming weekend.

Showers and thunderstorms may be more widespread and heavy across northern New England. The result may be more flash flooding.

Temperatures will be on the cool side ranging double digits below average through the weekend.

High temperatures will range from around 70 near the Canadian border to the low and middle 80s in southeast New York, New Jersey, southeast Pennsylvania, Delaware, eastern Maryland and Virginia.

Look for showers and thunderstorms across much of Upstate New York and Pennsylvania.

The weekend will feature more showers and thunderstorms across New York, northern Pennsylvania, northern New Jersey and New England. By Sunday isolated thunderstorms will sneak southward into eastern sections of the Mid-Atlantic.

South

A cold front will push off the Southeast Coast Friday and to the northern Gulf Coast and northern Florida by Saturday.

Thunderstorms will be mainly confined to the Gulf Coast area but pleasant and much less humid conditions will prevail across much of Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia and the Carolinas.

The western edge of the front will stall from Oklahoma to Louisiana and clusters of thunderstorms will develop and move southeastward along this stalled portion of the front.

Over the weekend, the Florida Peninsula will continue to see thunderstorms as well as the lower Mississippi Valley.

High temperatures through the weekend will range from the 80s and near 90 in the Tennessee Valley, north Georgia and Carolinas to the upper 90s and near 100 in Texas.

Midwest

The Great Lakes and Ohio Valley will enjoy pleasant temperatures, low humidity for awhile while rain becomes confined to the western High Plains and southern Plains.

By Saturday, a few thunderstorms may develop around the Great Lakes, however.

Weekend thunderstorms will be on the increase from the Plains into the western Mississippi Valley. Areas from southern Nebraska to extreme northwest Missouri may see some thunderstorms with heavy rain on Saturday.

High temperatures through the weekend will range from the 70s and low 80s around the Great Lakes to the 80s and low 90s in the northern and central high Plains.

West

Low pressure aloft and a cold front will sweep across western Canada and the Northwest this weekend.

Ahead of the front, high temperatures will be above average in the 90s. Behind the front, Washington and Oregon followed by Idaho and western Montana will turn much cooler.

Western Washington may see a few showers on Saturday.

A few thunderstorms will dot the Northwest, especially in the northern Rockies on Friday and in the eastern parts of Montana and Wyoming on Sunday.

Monsoon moisture will hold across the Southwest with thunderstorms more prevalent over the Four Corners states. A few thunderstorms will extend westward into eastern Nevada and interior Southern California, as well.

TROPICAL UPDATE

Two Pacific Tropical Storms

Tom Moore, Lead Meteorologist, The Weather Channel
8:14 p.m. ET 8/7/2008

In the eastern Pacific, 715 miles south-southwest of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, Tropical Storm Hernan (65 mph) is steadily strengthening and could become a minimal hurricane before reaching cooler waters. It is forecast to move westward away from any land, just a threat to open-sea mariners.

In the central Pacific, Kika (40 mph), nearly 100 miles southeast of Honolulu, remains a minimal tropical storm but some strengthening is still possible. It is forecast to stay well south of the any of the islands as it heads west-northwestward.

Disturbed weather well south of Manzanillo, Mexico, may develop slowly over the next couple of days

There is a new tropical wave and low south of the Cape Verde Islands that will be monitored over the next few days for possible slow development.
