The fallout from my stolen checkbook

So here come the letters: Dear criminal - a check you wrote has been returned to us unpaid. We have entered your name into the America's Most Wanted database, and you will be unable to write a check anywhere for the rest of your life.

I just chewed out a customer service rep, telling her that the check was not written by me, and that perhaps if their company policy was to check ID with a check, they might have caught it. As it is, I am faxing her the affidavit and police report tomorrow, and I told her I would be in touch if I EVER had a problem writing a check anywhere.

What a pain the A** this has turned out to be. As is always the case, it's the victim left to clean up the mess.

There, rant done!

Edited to add that the sheriff called the other day, and they are hot on her trail. Apparently she is a "person of interest" in several local police jurisdictions!

I hope they find her soon. Sorry you are having to go through this.

Why would anyone take a check without proper identification?

I still can't decide which stores I'm more angry with. The ones who checked nothing - like the one that sent the letter today, or the ones that checked something - ID # written on check - and didn't catch it.

So sorry to hear this - first I have heard about it.

It is crazy these days. You can't trust anyone!

Hope they catch whoever is doing this and hope you cancel your checking account and open a new one!

The checking account was cancelled when I discovered it and reported it to the bank, which is why my bank has returned a bunch of checks. I believe my cleaning lady took the check book shortly after Christmas. She had a NICE shopping trip!

Hope this is resolved soon, Lauren. My DS'es and DH are all cops and you can't imagine how widespread this is. They will stop someone for a routine traffic violation and punch their data into a computer and find out the person is wanted somewhere else for check writing fraud. I write out checks to almost all our stores and they ALWAYS require a picture ID (driver's license) As a matter of fact, I still have my DL that expired last May and gave to a clerk at K-Mart the other day and she wouldn't accept the check even tho she KNEW me and all the info was correct because the DL was "no good." I had my new DL, but kind of gave her a funny look, like what's the problem, but I guess it's nice to know she was on the ball. Good luck to you.
