Sydney, Nova Scotia excursions

For our upcoming Canada/New England cruise, there are three shore excursions that interest us in/near Sydney:

Fortress of Louisbourg
Baddeck & the Alexander Graham Bell Museum
Kat'tek: Place of Peace

Do any of you have experience with these tours? We need to stick with half-day tours as our 10-year-old will be with us. Or, should we just plan on walking around Sydney on our own? This will be our first time in Sydney.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Lisa63, I live in Halifax but have visited Cape Breton Island many times.Sydney itself does not have a lot to offer in terms of things to do during a one day visit. The boardwalk is an area to spend a hour if the weather is good.
The Fortress at Louisbourg is very interesting, it was rebuilt using the original plans about 30 years ago. Life as it was in the mid 1700s. It is about a 40 min. drive from the port of Sydney
The Alexander Graham Bell Museum is also very interesting in a different way. All of his inventions are highlighted many more than most people realize including a hydrofoil. Baddeck is a pretty town and is about an hours drive from Sydney. log on to www.cbisland.com Don't hesitate to contact me if you want more info at ger5y@hfx.eastlink.ca Regards.

Lisa,
We are on the same cruise I believe in August. My hubby & I will not be taking the excursions becuase this is our third cruise in this area. However, i would higly reccommend Louisbourg. it is phenomenal. it is the best display of this type that we have seen anywhere and we have seen a few. We have also been to Baddeck. it is a very nice village but I would take Louisbourg over it. i am not familiar with the last choice. Theother writer is correct when they said there is not much in Sydney. It is a small town that you can walk around but the walk will maybe take 45 minutes.
There are some small shops etc but that is it.
Hope that helps.

Thank you both. I'll have to check out the Web site you suggested, gaffer.

Fortress of Louisbourg now has a slight edge over the other two tours. I know my husband and son would enjoy it -- and I am happy as a result. :) The boardwalk also sounds lovely, and will be something to see when we get back to town. Perhaps we can find a place to have lunch in town.
