Sunday Update on MIL

Yesterday DH went down to spend time with his mom. She is in ICU and heavily sedated. The Dr's had attempted taking the ventilator out but had to put it back in. She opened her eyes a few times but didn't seem really to be present.

DH's dad (FIL) is tired, spent and we are trying to encourage him to take some time off from visiting every day, driving in from over an hour away. He is 80 and we are trying to give him a break while she is so well cared for in the hospital. Please send some good thoughts his way.

The only news we are getting from the Dr is that this is a long road and we are at the beginning.

We both thank you and appreciate all your prayers.

Thanks for the update Meg. However long the road might be your MIL will be in my thoughts and prayers. Special prayers for your FIL too. It is so easy to say he should rest but it is difficult to make him hear....that I understand. Many hugs!

Thanks for the update. Your mil may not even be aware when someone is there. Perhaps you can talk your fil into visiting every other day. Because you don't need the 2 of them sick.

SunFlower and I know all too well how difficult this is on, not just on your MIL, but your family and even the medical team. Is there any accommodation available at the hospital for your FIL? I know my hospital had a number of rooms they operated as a hotel for families who had difficulty commuting ... The cost was kept very low, and completely 'comped' for those in need.

Even though it is the beginning of a long road, I'm sending positive wishes for steady progress.

Check with the hospital like Calgon suggested. Even if they don't have rooms set aside for family, the hospital may have deals worked out with a nearby motel. When DS fractured his neck while on a trip to WI a few yrs back, the hospital gave us the name of a couple of places near the hospital with very good rates. With the cost of gas driving back & forth on a daily basis, it could work out to be almost the same. He would be able to see her & still get plenty of rest. In fact, he could even leave the hospital for a couple of hrs during the day & go back to his room to take a nap & return to see her later. Much easier than setting next to a hospital bed all day long.

I don't think you will be able to talk him out of not visiting her every day. If it was you & your love, would either of you stay away?

I know this is hard on all of you and understand the additional concern for you FIL and the long days at the hospital and the driving distance. We live in a rural area and to get to a major hospital it's an hour for us as well plus lots of traffic due to the hospital being in a large city.

It's hard not to want to be there everyday. I understand the emotions and logistics. I hope she improves soon and is able to be transferred somewhere closer to make things easier for all of you.
