I've read the review your speaking of, and while I haven't been on the Golden myself, I've been on the Grand and there is never a problem with people smoking outside the designated areas. There are not designated non-smoking areas, but designated smoking areas. There are few inside smoking areas, the casino being the major one. Otherwise, major smoking areas are outside, starboard side of the ship and individual balconies. The review you read said there was smoking everywhere. I have never encountered that, nor has anybody I know who has been on the Golden. I've never seen smokey hallways. I've never seen smoking outside the showrooms...as people who want to smoke go outside on the starboard side of the ship. I've never seen smoking in the inside lounges...apparently at one lounge there is smoking allowed at the bar...not in the lounge itself....and I never knew that after being on three cruises on the same ship! That being said, I never saw anyone sitting at that bar, so there couldn't have been too much smoke. Most people step outside as the Promenade deck is steps away. Most people on any cruiseship will tell you that when they enter their cabin, there is nary a smell of smoke. I've never had a problem. Cruiseships do much better than hotel rooms at eliminating smoke odor. People are amazed that cabins are not designated "smoking or non-smoking" and that you can't tell the difference.People will smoke on their balcony. If you have a problem with a neighbor regarding that, you might try to work something out.
