I can not imagine wearing shorts for dinner in the MDR, was on a RCCL cruise about 20 years ago and we had a great group of people at out table, including a English couple, he had a Tux on the formal nights but when he took off the tux jacket there were clowns all over the shirt, he also had a red nose that he put on briefly.
