Can anyone tell me what the salt water pools are like on-board Explorer, i.e. clean, dirty, heated, etc.? We sailed on the Ocean Princess in 2001 where the pools are fresh water and my children loved it. They are not to excited about the fact that RCCL does not have fresh water pools. What can we expect?

I have been on Voyager and Adventure (the sister ships of Exlorer) and the swimming pools were clean..I dont know if they are heated, but they are very warm because the sun is beating on them all day. So I dont think you have to worry about temperature. But they were clean. My kids werent excited about the fact that they werent fresh water either, but its not that bad and they have showers to wash off afterwards by the pool area. Hope that helps, any more questions, just ask...

The pools are salt water and to my view, quite clean. Since they will be swimming in that same salt water when they are on the beaches of the Caribbean islands you visit, I think they will get over the fact that the pools are not (chlorinated) fresh water. They may even find they like the increased buoyancy that salt water provides.

The first time I ever went on a cruise, I didn't even realize the pools were salt water. We were just on the Navigator in December and the pools were very clean.

Most if not all RCL ship's pools including hot tubs are salt water. They are usually are emptied each night at midnight and re filled again in the morning (a net is usually stretched over top of the pool to keep people from falling in, as they are quite deep and usually they dont have a dropoff... just a big box shaped hole.

The pools are not heated but, unless you are from Texas where our own pool gets up to 88 degree in August, since they fill the pools from the Caribbean, you will find the water about 78-82 most of the time and even warmer as the day goes on.

The pools are salt, but the water is exchanged with "fresh" seawater on a regular basis so it's about as clean as it's going to get for a spot of water with a zillion people flopping around in it :-)

My experience has been that the hot tubs, however, are freshwater.

Just came back from the Explorer for the 2nd time. The pools were clean, clean, clean!!! The whole ship was spotless.Happy Sailing. Laurie
