Question for wine experts

My wife and I never drink wine. Okay, maybe a glass every year or two. On past cruises we have tasted some red wine (Georges Duboeuf I believe) and we liked it.

We will be cruising with some cheapskates and they want to bring a few large bottles of wine on board the Carnival Victory and pay the corkage fee and drink at dinner.

Please give me your advice on which type of wine I should tell these cheapskates to buy (locally) so that we will be drinking good quality wine on the ship and so that it will be the same type of wine that is sold on the ship. (These people are into impressions and want people to think that they are buying the wine on the ship).

Anyway, all advice on wine types is appreciated.

I am a complete novice, so don’t make fun of my post. All that I know is that my wife and I like red wine, not so keen on white wine. I really don’t care what our friends like, and they only care that they are saving a ton of cash (even with the corkage fee factored in).

So, with that in mind, if you could also give an approximate cost that we should pay for this wine locally (not on the ship).

Thanks in advance

Black Opal Cabernet Sauvignon is good red wine I think in my opinion, I know you said you don't like white wines but Moscato is a good white wine for after dinner kinda like a dessert wine(really a sweeter taste). Have fun on the cruise!!

Sorry, I can't say much about wine except I had an elderly friend who was like a mother to me. She would usually serve a white zinfedal, which was light and I don't think it was expensive.

Also, I have read on this board several times by individuals who were surprised about the table wine person NOT chargind a corkage fee. So, prepare to pay the fee and but don't be surprised IF they do not charge it.

I drink only white wine, but I did purchase some Kendall Jackson Merlot (red) last week. for my guests. It was $17 or $18 here in New Orleans. My friends said it was very good. (I like Kendall Jackson whites, so I try to stick with a vintner I like.) On Carnival ships, this paricular bottle costs $37.00

As far as other reds, I've seen tablemates order Walnut Crest Merlot (least expensive on Carnival's wine list, I believe), at $21.00, and Beaujolais-Village, George DuBuoef at $25.00. Sorry, but I have no idea how much these two are in local stores. Your friends would have to check for themselves.

After re-reading your post, these folks need to know that they aren't likely to be fooling anyone by bringing their own wine to the dining room. I mean, they will be WALKING IN with it. Duh. (They can't take it to their waiter ahead of time and ask them to 'store' it for them, y'know?) There's nothing wrong with taking your own wine to dinner - no need to try to "impress" your tablemates. Nobody really cares. I can't imagine anyone at the table trying to see the label on a wine bottle. No one is going to look at your wine and say 'ewwww'. Everyone has different tastes, but honestly - who cares what anybody else is drinking?

I have brought wine on board many times to have in my cabin. I usually buy a couple of bottles in the dining room during a cruise, but I have on occasion taken my own to the dining room. I have never been charged a corkage fee. This is generally at the discretion of your waiter. Some impose the corkage fee, and some don't. No rhyme nor reason, as I can see.

Hope this helps?

A great inexpensive wine is Fetzer Merlot, it's a great all around red. Bring it aboard or you can buy it on the ship.

I'm not a wine expert either. I enjoy a glass of White Zifandel every now and then. Friends we always cruise with always buy a bottle of wine at the beginning of the cruise and have a glass with dinner each night-the waiter will keep it for you. They LOVE Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon. I have no idea how much it costs, and I have never tasted it. I am not a red wine drinker. Gives me a headache! :( I do know that most of the cruise ships offer this wine. Good luck. Does this couple think that the people at other tables will actually be trying to read the label on the wine bottle?? =headscratch

Just go to Gifts and Services on the Carnival website. You will see there a few of the wines you can purchase before leaving to be delivered to your cabin. That will give you some brand names. I'd buy what you like to drink ... get some suggestions from a nice wine store where you live.
