My daughter packed to go home today and was backing out of her parking space when she felt a big bump . She got out of her car and saw her laptop computer in it's bag with a wheel mark on it! She had put everything in her trunk to take home but didn't realize her computer bag was still on the ground by the trunk of the car. The computer is totaled. Her two years of school work was in that computer...she is learning to be a graphic designer. When she saw this , she lost it and went berserk and started screaming crying and throwing up. She had to be carried in her condo by one of the guys who heard her screaming. I know this sounds over-reacting but you got to realize this was her life for the past two years and was just ruined. Her art and school work all in it. The kid got straight A's but nothing to show unless you have your computer. Well, God was looking after her, because she went to the school next to hers and they were able to save the heart of the computer, somehow! We, we have to fork out money for another computer, but we had a talk with her to try and control herself, but she said we just don't understand how serious this was. She hasn't been feeling well since but we handled this with kid gloves...she was that upset. Seriously, what is money next to your health and nerves, ....nothing. We told her things like this will happen in her life and she needs to handle it better, and think about what she can do to help herself. A good , long , loving hug helped, too!

Sorry she was so upset, but glad it turned out well after all. My son studied graphic arts and I know how much work goes into those school projects. Good thing she has such loving parents to help her out!!

Another lesson learned here: back up, back up, back up your data! An external hardrive is so cheap and so wonderful for things like this.

She freaked, and gave in to the moment. I get it. She works out her trauma in this way. The bad thing, is that the needs to find another way to work it out, or she set herself up for some unwanted physical effects from the way she handles things now. She's a smart kid, so she would have worked this out sooner exactly the same way if she hadn't given in.

Help her find ways to handle these things, because life is not easy, and she'll appreciate the tools she gets. And yes, one of those tools sure would be an external drive.

Phew so glad she was able to save the hard drive. Some kids are just more emotional than others. Once she got her emotions out she was able to think about a resolution. As she gets older she will learn to control those impulses.

You're all so right! Her dad has been telling her how important it is to constantly do backup. Blusky...you hit it on the nail. She does have a lot to learn when things go really wrong...but she is young and I guess she just experienced a first!

I also learned the hard way (an oldie here) when on Dec 1, 2006, a tornado went through about 10 miles from our house and the power went out -- I was working on my computer and last the hard drive.

Now I back up verything.

So glad your daughter was able to get her material back that she needs. I can understand how she felt and why she got hysterical -- I freak out very easily over little things.

i back up every single day. sooooooooooooo important. i am so glad she was able to retreive all her work. what a relief.

Back up, back up, back up. An external hard drive is good and cd s are so cheap now that the most important stuff can go on them.

Rubysky...my husband sounded like a broken record to her about this and she made the decision and now had to live with it...learned the hard way!!

You can even purchase software that "hides in the background" and automatically saves all work to a location of choice, every time you close a file. Just have your removable hard (or thumb) drive plugged in immediately after powering-up; and remove it when you power-down. It's a little expensive, but much cheaper than repeating two years of college!

Yikes! Oh Kathy, I am so glad that it worked out! What a nightmare! I am sure that my daughter would also be very upset also. She had computer problems early in the school year and lost some work. Steve told her
to back it up. Do you think she does? I bet ya she doesn't! Oh well, I guess she will have to learn the hard
way (so will I - I will be going out tomorrow and getting some cd's as I just did our taxes lol )
