On 4th May, MSC Opera became the last ship in the MSC Cruises fleet to set sail from Brazil and head back to Europe for the summer, concluding a record-breaking season for the company in South America.

Colourful end-of-season celebrations in Santos (Brazil) on 3rd May and in Rio de Janeiro the following day were attended by representatives of the local, port and maritime authorities as well as key figures from the national tourism industry.

In the company’s largest, longest and most varied South American season ever, a fleet of six luxurious vessels toured the region between October 2009 and May 2010, offering a wide variety of itineraries lasting from 3 to 9 nights, including 13 special themed cruises.

The unprecedented success of the season confirms MSC Cruises’ status as the number one cruise company in Brazil and South America.

In Brazil alone, the company offered a total of 142 cruises, making 520 calls at 13 different cities. Passenger numbers reached 302,500, a 56% increase compared to the previous year, while group bookings rose by an even more remarkable 173% to 1,154.

As well as providing guests with an unforgettable holiday experience, the market leader’s activities also have a major impact on the region’s economy. Taking into account transport charges, supplies, fuel, salaries, fees, taxes and commissions to travel agents as well as direct spending by guests, MSC Cruises injected an estimated R$ 543.5 million (approximately 300 million US dollars) into the Brazilian economy over the course of the season.

The company’s focus now turns to Europe for the 2010 summer season. After crossing the Atlantic, the six ships that took part in the South American season, plus MSC Poesia on her return from the Caribbean, join the rest of the fleet in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.

MSC Cruises' intensive summer offering in its "home territory" of the Mediterranean boasts 23 different itineraries of 3 to 11 nights, comprising a total of no less than 264 cruises. In Northern Europe, meanwhile, the company is offering a choice of 11 exhilarating itineraries between May and September for a total of 39 cruises, each lasting between 2 and 11 nights. With a product offering of such scale and variety spanning the globe, this dynamic Italian company’s international reputation for bringing innovation to the cruise industry looks set to keep on growing.
