Just got back from the Ecstasy...

Went with a large group from my husband's company. Carnival did 2 things right on our cruise: 1.) disembarkation and 2.) ordered great weather! Other than that, I would advise anyone who wants to do a 'quickie' cruise out of LA to wait for another ship to do that itinerary. The Spirit will do one cruise in May and there are other ships that will be doing a few 3 & 4 night cruises here and there. The Ecstasy is in desparate need of a total renovation. We felt like we were stuck in 1980 and couldn't get out! :lol

We did the E last March and I know what you mean about being stuck in the 80's. We liked the ship, crew and food but man was that decor dated! For her age, I think she wears it well. The big highlight of our little cruise to Ensenada (dump) via Catalina Island (nice) was the ships casino! Great staff there followed me to our next cruise in June on the Victory...had sent word ahead and we were greeted by the Vic's casino staff on arrival...pretty impressive I must say. And that Ocean Players Club is lots of fun too!

Happy Cruising

My wife and I traveled on the Ecstacy back in 1995. We loved her. She is a perfect honeymoon ship, but she her decor is getting dated.

Just did my first cruise on the Ecstacy last March 2002. For our first cruise, we had a wonderful time, no complaints. But we are ready for bigger and better things now. I'm ready for the Star Princess. :)

Boy, you aren't kidding, Mike! The entire ship needs a total renovation. I've never seen so many broken things on a ship! It's as if they aren't bothering to make repairs because they know they ship is going to be totally remodeled soon. (At least, I'm hoping it will be.) I felt as if I had stepped into The Twilight Zone and was back in high school again, circa 1980. At every turn, I kept expecting Kathie Lee to jump out and sing, "In the mornin', in the evenin', ain't we got fun?" :grin

What worries me is that there are a lot of first-time cruisers on this ship and they get the impression that this is what cruising is like. It is a WHOLE lot better! I hope it doesn't discourage too many people from trying longer cruises on newer ships.

Bobbie I remember my first cruise onboard a "tug"..LOL My thoughts at that time were "this is nothing like the Love Boat." Hopefully first time cruisers will realize when they get on that second cruise what a difference a new ship makes. Expectations of the first sailing are just that as they have nothing to compare it to. I agree though that so many of the older ships are in need of a "redo."

This is really awful, but I am a travel agent that has taken pictures of the E to show clients... to help them go on another cruise line. The decor is sickening- have had clients miserable 'cause they could not find one spot on that ship that was not over decorated!

A refit would be wonderful!

Sharon - That's the difference - you're a TA and know how much nicer most ships are compared to the Ecstasy. So many people on it are first-time cruisers and think that's what cruising is and never want to cruise again.

I respect you for showing people the pictures of the Ecstasy so they won't waste their money or if they still choose to go, go with open eyes and don't expect too much. The Viking Serenade was made in 1971 and was in better shape! It was still bad, but at least it was cleaner!

All I can say is wait until the Pride makes it to LA. I know that she will not be doing the short 3 & 4 day cruises but this is a remarkable change in decor. I refuse to sail on a Fantasy class vessel again. After four of them I have had enough. Give me the Spirit class anyday. I also feel the Destiny class ships are too large but they are toned down and much nicer interiors compared to the early Fantasy class ships.

Good to know that it wasn't just us, Gordon! Do you know when the Pride is coming to LA? Anything's got to be better than the Ecstasy! :wave

I believe that the Pride is coming in around September of 2003 when the Elation leaves for Texas.
