How does porter know your stateroom # when you have GUAR?

How does the porter know what stateroom will be assigned to me if I just have a GREY luggage tag and a GUAR room assignment?

The cabins are already assigned by the day of sailing. The porters have passenger manifests that list all the cabins by passenger name. If you don't know your cabin number by the time you get to the ship, just let the porter know and he'll look it up for you and then you can write the cabin number on your luggage tags.

Happy Cruising,

If you are talking about the porters you hand your baggage to on the pier, in most cases they are not teh same ones who deliver your baggage, the porters take your bags after ripping you off for a tip, put your bags in wire crates or pallets and they are then put on the ship. The ships crew then moves the luggage once inside and it is delivered, That (having the porters deliver it) would be far to much of a security risk, When leaving the process is done in reverse.

Regards

Pete

But they do have a manifest of where it is going

Yes indeed Pete, those are the rascals I was talking about. You have to have them write your cabin number on the tags BEFORE you let them put your bags on the ship. I agree too Pete; always a drag being hustled for a tip when you show up at the pier.

I am so glad I read this post, because this being our first guaranteed cabin, we were wondering how it is done for our tags. So, no matter what, don't let anyone touch our luggage UNTIL we find the cabin number and write it on the luggage tags!!

If you got your documents check on the back of the sign and sail page. Look for a very long number that starts with your booking number. If you did NOT book your cruise within the last fw days== the cabin number will be in those numbers.. If not it will say GTEE.

But dont write those numbers on your tags until you get to the pier and ask the porter as those can change too.

The key of course is knowing what the cabin number is, but the line that cracks me up at the pier is when the porter comes up and says, I will be the one responsible for getting your bags to your cabin NOT but oh by the way, a tip would sure be nice. I will give you a tip, go hustle someone else

Oh well

I'm confused.... so, do we give our luggage to these porters or to someone from the ship?

Pretty much! Once you get the bags to the porter, they get them to the boat for you. I'm not really sure if it is your actual steward that brings your bags to your room for you or someone else. You don't see them (the bags) until sometime later on. Soooo, I suggest, if you are thinking about maybe wanting to go for a swim, or "slip into something a little more comfortable" :) I would carry those extra clothes with you in a little carry on bag, or backpack, something like that. Then (probably after you eat a little something) you will go back to your cabin and realize that the "Baggage Fairy" has delivered your stuff to your door! The funny thing for me was, I saw my bags about 3 times on the ship before they actually made it to my room. I saw them coming off of the elevator, around the corner from my cabin, and once just down the hall. It was so funny, I was thinking... (would they be mad if I took my OWN stuff). For us it was ok, we were prepared to wait for our bags, and we were so busy doing other stuff we didn't really care! Hope this helps!

toodles!

Janet, you give your bags to the porters they in turn put them in pallets so they can be loaded to the ship, at that point the ships crew will move the luggage and normally but not in all cases your room steward will actually put your luggage in the room

The frustation with the porters is that they imply they will be getting the bagge to your room and that is not true

I don't think it has been made entirely clear yet just how you get your cabin # on your bags.
What happens is that the porter takes a gray tag off of one of your bags (which has your name and all already on it). Then he goes and finds out what your cabin assignment is, and brings you the proper color tags to fill out and replace the gray tags. You have to fill them out quickly if you don't want to hold everything up. But just put your cabin # and name basically on them. That should get them to your cabin.

If you have a balcony cabin, it is interesting to watch them load pallet after pallet of luggage onto the ship. Amazing actually.

Have fun and don't worry about the luggage. It will get to you sooner or later. LOL

Belizemama...Thank you! I can put this all together now! I read somewhere to make up peel-off slips at home to bring with you for your luggage tags, but it was never said that you can immediately put these name slips onto your new color-coded tags!! I was wondering why you had to have those peel-off slips with all the info on them. Now I know. On the back of the gray tags you would have to fill out :

NAME
ADDRESS
CITY-STATE-ZIP
PHONE
SAILING DATE
AIRLINE
ORIGINAL FLIGHT NO.
RETURNING FLIGHT NO.
CABIN NO.
So, on your peel-off slips fill out the same info at home...{ less your cabin number, of course} Make enough peel-off slips for each piece of luggage you want to have boarded onto the ship. I even put them on the ones I am carrying { in case for some reason I lose one} MAKE SURE THAT THE PEEL-OFF SLIPS WILL ALLOW THE COLOR CODE TO SHOW! This will save you a LOT of time when you will be asked to fill out each new color-coded luggage tag! If you are a guarantee and found your cabin number on the back of your docs...I still would NOT fill that number in until you are at the dock! With a guarantee, your cabin number is allowed to change right up to sailing!

Its just a ripoff for the curbside porters. Can you imagine if every airline passenger had to hand their luggage to these people and get hustled for the appropriate tip. Why can't we walk our luggage to the spot and hand it over to be put on the ship. Its called ripoff, and the power of unions. What happened to customer choices...

Jim...I understand exactly what you are saying. If people were paid decent wages, we wouldn't have to pay for them! I wish I could go on a vacation and pay one price, and have all that nonsense included in the deal! I really don't understand why we have to give a tip to tour guides. We pay top dollar per person for these tours, yet they expect tips. I use to be a waitress, so I know how important it is to receive tips, so I give what is expected, but wish they were paid decently.

We go on a cruise and we end up tipping, :: the cab driver to the airport, the porters to take your luggage, then the porters to get your luggage to another cab, the cab driver to the hotel, the porter to take it to your room, the porter to take it to the cab the next morning, the cab driver on the morning of the cruise, the porter to take it onto the ship, the waiter, waitresses, room stewards, wine steward, tour guides, and all over again back home! Whew, it is a small fortune in tips by the end of the trip!
