Just heard on the news that voters in Alaska will have to brave the temps to go vote...

They said it will be -50 degrees !! Is that really true???? How do you do it??

If it was me, I'd get up, see the temps, then get back into bed. It's warmer there.....

I can't even begin to imagine temps like that. :dizzy

Mal, cool pic! :lol Even the redback on the toilet seat wouldn't be a threat! :grin

Sorry, I didn't see this earlier. Have been a bit busy at work. Almost played hooky due to the temps, and yes JillB, it REALLY is that cold. Anyway, glad I came in as it has been a very productive day. I would be way behind the power curve if I had stayed at home.

When the weather is like this, it makes us really appreciate the zero degree weather. Heck, I have bar-b-qued at zero! :lol Basically, you can't let this cold keep you in all the time, or you go a little nuts. Just dress for the weather, and go out and take care of business. A lot of businesses here do close when it gets this cold, but all the major (and some minor) retailers don't close and even do about normal amount of business. Of course auto repair places do a brisk business. . . . . One of the reasons I am extremely adament about keeping the car serviced on a regular schedule.

When it gets this cold, the ice fog gets so think you can barely see the road. Today we drove at about 30 MPH (or slower) and could hardly see the taillights of the car ahead of us. Since we have been here (more than 19 years now) they closed the schools here ONCE when the ice fog was bad. Not for the temperature (-55), but because they felt it was unsafe for the buses to run when the visibility was that poor.

Hucc - At least there's no mosquitos to mess with him while cooking! :D

Jill - I never thought I'd say this, but you really do get used to it... like Tobyn said it just makes you appreciate zero better. I hate that I had to wear a hat today. At zero you don't even have to zip your coat...

Guess I should have added . . .Yes Reggae, this morning at our houes, the thermometer indicated -50. We will be stopping by the polling place on the way home to vote. Can't let the weather keep us from our civic responsibilities! :grin We MUST make our voice heard. :lol :lol :lol

Tobyn, I know your every day life is just that...your every day life. However, it is a different life then so many face each day. I want to thank you for sharing things like this about life in Alaska (North Pole, Alaska no less :) ) I enjoy reading your post just to compare life in Alaska to .....life in Kansas :lol

I feel the same when reading post from Jill in Austraila, a place I hope to some day visit. However, her post maybe the closest I ever get to Austrailia in this life time??? or, to North Pole, Alaska, via your post.

To all cruise addicts who share a piece of your life/world with the rest of us....I say thank you :)

yes, thanks for the share Tobyn and Bread. It gets cold here in Michigan, but I just can't imagine the cold you get. When it gets around -5 or -10 here, and I walk the dog, it's so cold, it burns your face, if you know what I mean?? And the dog can't go far because he keeps trying to hold his paws up. Crazy dog begs to go for a walk no matter what the weather.

So I just figure you guys must have the knowledge of how to dress and protect your face from that cold.

Also, like Suez said, I appreciate hearing about life in Alaska, and life in Australia too. So many interesting things learned here. Thanks guys :)

Bread, the closest we get to zero here is 0 C, which is 32 F, and that is VERY cold for us. As you say, we get used to our weather, though I don't like it when it gets over 104 F.

Thanks Suez and reggae; I learn a lot here too. :)

Reggae - I grew up in the South Suburbs of Chicago (The OTHER Lansing :lol ) Midwest cold is bone-chilling for sure cuz it's a wet cold. Alaska Interior cold is very dry, most of the time snow is just fluff that blows off your car when you slam the door. Anchorage snow on the other hand is the heavy, wet, miserable stuff. But they don't get the extreme temperatures that we do. I prefer our colder temps. It is kinda freaky to think there is a 120 degree difference between you and whats on the other side of your windows!

Our new pup Rylee loves the cold and playing in the snow. We are a little less thrilled and try to keep her focused to do her business. She has learned to walk our treadmill to get exercise, at least when it is this cold.

A friend of mine lives in Soldotna, is it anywhere near you? He said he could not start his car, everything was frozen.

Crazy weather -- in NY it was in the 60's, and tomorrow will be warmer. I like the cold weather, please send some to me.

Anchorage is 350 miles south of us. Soldotna is south of Anchorage (not very far "as the crow flies" but more than 100 road miles). I would expect them to be in a warm weather pattern like Anchorage. But I guess "warm" is relative. :grin That said, since their air has a LOT more moisture in it than up here, they would be covered in ice and be frozen.

Tobyn, it was 81 here yesterday, but today it was sleeting. I think it's easier to have it cold all winter, just not -55. Right now, the trees are really confused, the ones that aren't demolished from the ice storm.

Tobyn, thanks for your answer. I heard from my friend, and he is doing okay now. His car started, and he was able to do what he needed to do,

Someday, I must get to Alaska, I have been invited and I intend to go. I even missed one cruise, because I took sick and had to cancel one week before.

Burrrr, I just can't imagine that kind of cold. I know my BIL/SIL lived in Fairbanks when he was in AF and they got transferred from there to KI Sawyer in MI and they got more snow in MI then in AK.

When the temps get below 25 degrees here I am chilled to the bone. We've had a crazy yo yo winter so far. Yesterday it got to 72 degrees and is suppose to reach 75 today....cold front will move in late today and back to winter weather by the end of the week.

I can't relate or even imagine! :lol I was born and raised in Texas and I am V-E-R-Y cold natured. If the temps get below 55 degrees, my teeth actually start chattering!

Here in SC, you can spot the locals when the temps drop, the locals wear parkas and the tourist wear wind breakers.
