I have 2 girls ages 9 and 12 who are very excited to leave for our cuise on Sunday. I know when they are away they want to get their hair braided and I am wondering if any of you with kids have had this done ...approx how much and where. We are going to Cozumel, Grand Cayman and Ocho Rios. I am assuming there are venders on the beaches or something?

Deb

Deb, there are women waiting to braid hair at just about any caribbean port you go to, but I would recommend you have it done in jamaica. Can't tell you what the cost is though. Can't be too expensive because alot of people have it done, just be prepared to have to take them out, cause it takes awhile.

buck a braid. and they'll find you.

and they're a beast to take out. be prepared to cut them out.

Hello...
I had my hair braided while I was in Mexico and it cost me $10.00 for the crown of my head. I had no problems taking them out. I just took the bands out and they came out easily.

Make sure you put sun screen on the parts between braids as I didn't and my head got burnt, then it flaked off and I had to take my braids out sooner than I needed to... So sun screen your heads. You can buy it at any beauty supply store before you go.

Have fun!!

they will bargain with you , they will first tell you it is 2 dollars per braid... it is only one dollar usually per braid, and my girlfriend who has very long thick hair got them down to 25 for the whole head.. yes they are everywhere.. jamaica would be the place to do it but be prepared to have atleast 3 to 4 hours of your day contribute to this :)

I know that I've read on the cruise boards that there have been some people that have gotten head lice. Even if they use a new comb how do you know that they don't have it and it jumps to you. It seems like too much of a risk to ruin a vacation.

Our next door neighbor on the Conquest had her entire head done for $25 in Jamaica and she had long hair. She loved it and with all that wind out on the balcony she said it was worth every penny to keep her hair out of her eyes. She kept it braided for the rest of the week. Bet you could get a discount with two girls doing it at once. The people in Jamaica are very poor and are willing to do just about anything for money...

Just a word of advice when you are taking out the braids- put lots of hair conditioner on them first. The sea water, sand and sun make your hair very brittle. My hair broke off and was a mess because of the braids. They are great, but you can take precautions and have healthier hair than I did!

OH EWWWWW! Are you serious? People have actually caught head lice from getting these braids?????? My daughter wanted this done very very much this year, but I sure don't want to deal with lice on vacation. How often has this happened? I mean, I can see how this can happen, but if you bring your own comb? Any other ideas?

I'm not sure how often this happens, but I know I have read it at least a few times on the cruise message boards. To each his own, but I wouldn't take a chance. Head lice jump so who is to say even if you used a new comb out of a package you wouldn't get it from them, and of course it would be more prevalent in a poorer country.

My two nieces and sister just had their hair braided this past weekend in the Bahamas. They asked for $75 per person and my sister ended up paying $25 each. I passed on this lol

I had mine done in Bermuda and I think I paid $25 or $30 for just the top to the crown, but things are more expensive in Bermuda, you should be able to get it cheaper.

The advice about conditioner is a good one. I wore my braids for a couple of weeks and when I took them out my hair broke alot. Fortunately I have very thick hair because I would say it was a 1/3 thinner when done, but it grows back. The worst spots are by the temples.

Also, if you girls are tender headed the corn row type braiding hurts quite a bit, or at least I thought so, but I loved having them and would probably do it again.

Although, the lice thing kinda set me back a bit.....I don't know if certain places are more prone to this than others. Check it out.

Good luck and have a great time! =)

We had it done last dec. in St.Martin and had no problems. We paid $20. a head. They told us to keep conditioner in the hair. The girls left it in for about a month and washing it good helped. When we took it out we put conditioner on each braid. It makes it slippery. If that does not work try Cowboy Magic conditioner ( it is for horses but works great for tangles.) I use it on myself and kids. It is sold at horses type stores. My girls want to have it done again.

As an RN, I think it would be pretty rare for someone to get head lice just by someone working with their hair -- it would have to be from the use of the comb. Here's a simple fix for this comb issue -- go to a beauty supply store and find out what kind of comb is used for this and bring your own along for the braider to use on you!

Relax and Enjoy your cruise!

Just a comment since I have read the "lice jumping" comment a couple of times. Head lice do not jump.

I would be hesitant to get my girls hair braided if I did not have my own comb, that might be a problem. But they will not "jump" from the braiders hair to yours or your childrens.

I have teenage girls, I know how hard it is to tell them know when they "really, really" want it. So, if you decide to let them braid their hair, just be sure to have your own comb and/or brush. Your kids have as much risk of getting head lice in school by sharing with their friends as they do of getting them on an island cruise. Lice are not an affliction of the "poor" or unclean.

Why do you feel that because a person is poor they'll do anything for money? How do you know the people in Jamaica are very poor? Did you ask them? Did you live with them to find out? Or did you just jump off the cruise ship onto the island and feel superior. You make some very big assumptions in your statements.

I want to apologize if I offended anyone. Guess I should think more before I say such things. Sorry again....

Diane,

No need to apologize. Your comments weren't directed to any, one particular Jamaican. You were just making a generalization, and statistics do speak for themselves, and I personally did not take your comments to be mean-spirited. You appeared to be making an observation, and some people apparently get hot under the collar easily.
