Grand Princess Balcony Cabins

We are considering booking the Grand Princess out of Galveston in February. I have previously read that the outside of the balcony stateroom decks are stepped as you go up the ship. It was noted that if you are on lower balcony decks..that those above you can look down over your balcony. Can anyone suggest best balcony decks for the G.P?
We would like to book the lowest balcony cabin grade possible. Any comments will be greatly appreciated.

For my money, I would choose Caribe deck. The balconies are much larger there, plus they are 1/2 cover, 1/2 open so you get the best of both worlds.

Kathy is right, the Caribe Deck is the way to go. Best of both worlds. Huge balcony and somewhat private for well...you know.

I agree, Caribe deck is very nice, the balcony gets the perfect balance of sun and shade. We had breakfast and drinks out there throughout the cruise. Try cabin C104.

Although I agree with all the replies (as that is my opinion as well) TX Cruiser did say that he/she wanted to book the lowest balcony category possible... and that would be the Baja balconies. (There are 8 balcony cabins on Emerald that are a lower categtory, but they are really bad).

The Baja balconies are smaller than Caribe, and are fully covered.. but if you need to save the cash, they are just fine.

DJA, we are booked on the Grand for January 29, 2005 on the Emerald deck. We are confirmed in a BF balcony forward room.......you said that these 8 balcony rooms were awful......what is wrong with them?
We are hoping for an upgrade, but need to know if we can live with this cabin if we don't get it.
Thanks for your help

THERE IS NO AWFUL CABIN ON A CRUISE SHIP :)

Any balcony cabin is better than your couch at home :)

You're right, mlzangel 78, there should be no bad cabins on a cruise......especially balcony ones. I am just curious as to what might make them "awful" cabins, since we have a confirmation in one. This will be our second cruise. We cruised by Carnival (Victory) to the Eastern Caribbean last May for our 50th anniversary and fell in love with cruising. We had a balcony cabin and enjoyed it immensely. We are really looking forward to getting out on the sea again! Really do enjoy this forum......everybody keep up the good work! Happy Cruising to alllllll.......

Cottonblossom,

Saved myself some typing by pulling up an old post I had written a while ago on this subject...

Don't bank on the upgrade if you think you won't like the BF.

Hope this helps.

I believe the BF cabins you're referring to are the balcony cabins far forward?? If not, no need to read on. If so, they are nice cabins with a big balcony... but the problem with these cabins is that the balcony is fully covered, doesn't get much sun, and doesn't look down over the ocean, as it is fairly far inboard from the side of the ship. The balcony sits out along the little section of the promenade where it transitions up from the Promenade deck. What this results in is a pretty significant lack of privacy as people walk up the little set of stairs headed for the front of the Emerald deck where the promenade circles the bow. They are VERY close... people could shake hands with you over the balcony rail as they walk by. I've never stayed in one, but every time I sail on the Grand I make a mental note not to, as I personally would not enjoy that interaction. It depends on what you like though, I always notice that the people in those cabins are often chatting with the pedestrians... so if you like that you may enjoy it, but if you don't you may want to think about changing cabins.

DJA is correct. If you think the lack of privacy will bother you, you might want to change cabins.

Agreed that the Caribe balconies are IMO the BEst for the $$$. Also agre that the BF cat balcony rooms are the absolute worst as U have traffic going by ALL day from the walk around promenade so there is VERY little privacy. They are also covered and have BO access to sunlight so they are VERY dark. If possible I would change and if NOT then I am sure U will still have a Gr8 time. :thumb

Much thanks to ALL of you for your help. Having not cruised on Princess before, we were not too sure about the location of our balcony cabin on the Emerald deck. I called my TA today and we are now on the Caribe deck.....(our expense of course).....did not want to take a chance for an upgrade. We are in Cabin C251.....can't wait......but, since I am such a Christmas nut, we will need to celebrate the holidays first!!! Happy cruising to all!
