Giving a speech

I have never spoken in front of a crowd unless you count the girls at work but my lovely husband has volunteered me to speak at the Relay for Life kickoff meeting on Tuesday. I have about 10 minutes to talk about caring for a child with cancer and Elliott himself. That actually would take hours so I need to know what I should touch on. Any suggestions? And I would be terrifed if I did not think this was a very important subject to a very important crowd.

Good luck! I have no hints but just speak from your heart. Imagine that you are writing to us.

Use this as your introduction ...

"But now abide faith, hope, love, these three." (1st Corinthians 13:13).

From there, just let your heart open up.

I would try to focus on exactly how events like the "Relay for Life" and The American Cancer Society have helped you through your experience...both emotionally and financially. Tell them that you hope that one day very soon Elliott will be doing laps of his own in celebration of his victory over this horrible disease. Don't forget (and I know you won't) to say thank you to those that are participating in this particular relay for their caring, their time and their committment to raising money for Cancer research.

Cindy,

I read earlier in Caring bridge about the speech and felt for you. I used to hate it but I found that if I was really prepared and understood the subjest very well I was a lot more comfortable. I think you are knowledgeable in the subject. Practice in front of some friends a couple of times.

I think you will do just fine Cindy. Once you get past the first couple of sentences, the rest will come natually. Good luck!

I think the hardest part will be keeping it down to a short time. I did a "witness" at church about my walk with cancer. Speak from the heart, and you'll be okay.
