Known around the globe for its catwalk couture and haute cuisine, Florence (or Firenze as it's called in Italian), one of the most romantic weekend getaways in the world, is a city that exudes sex appeal in spades. Magnificent palazzos, churches, and museums holding some of the world's greatest art collections flank tiny cobblestone streets.
How to experience it: For the perfect romantic weekend getaway, feel like you've been plucked from a Fellini film and walk along the Arno River with your sweetie. Or head to Piazza Michelangelo, where the sun sets over a giant replica of Michelangelo's masterpiece, David. Trek to the top of The Boboli Gardens (an extension of the Pitti Palace) past classical statues and blooming flowers for wondrous views of the city. The culinary inclined will keep an eye out for restaurants that don't accept credit cards - this tell-tale sign is helpful in avoiding the glut of tourist traps. Be sure to sample the super-Tuscan wines - red (or rosso) spells romance. Although Florence's historical attractions are endless, this is a town best explored with a loose plan and at a leisurely pace. You never know when the mood will strike to sit at a café with a perfectly foamed cappuccino and simply watch the world go by.
What to watch out for:
It's practically sacrilege to visit Florence without stopping by the Uffizi Gallery, even just on a weekend getaway. Avoid the ridiculously long lines and make reservations in advance. Give your concierge at least 48-72 hours notice for the day you want to go, and tickets can be bought in five minutes flat.
Sleeps:
For a romantic weekend getaway to Florence, try the Grand Hotel Villa Medici. Many rooms at this bright and airy five-star hotel boast balconies with Duomo and Palazzo Vecchio views. Lounge by in the gardens by the swimming pool or on the rooftop terrace.
Rooms start at $450.
