There is much more risk from that than in the ship breaking down.

That is fair. Still, some of us (a minority) really don't care what ports the ship goes to.
Honestly though, if I were going primarily to snorkle I would fly and have 6+ days instead of 6 hours. Grand Cayman, if that is the port you are talking about, is always a possible missed port due to the tendering thing.

I had a 10% off coupon and Carnival took 10% off the whole ball of wax. The taxes may have been reduced proportionally anyway, but the port charges wouldn't be. So in practice, they probably gave me 12% off the base fare (best price available, booked through my TA).
