Driving in Sicily

We will be in Messina Sicily in October 2004.

Is it a good idea to rent a car for a tour of the island? How much would it be and are there any rental car companies near the harbour?

I have been to Sicily on a land vacation. I am not sure if I would drive a car myself. I do not know what shore excursions you will have, but be sure to go to Toaramina.
