DIY Shore Excursions

For the major AK cruise ports, are there some good do-it-yourself excursions to get
away from the crowds and keep some money in the wallet? We think it would be cool
just to walk around town, check out the history, see some museums, and even find our
own little piece of AK to hike away from the more touristy parts of the ports.

Any suggestions for DIY activities in any of the ports?

In Juneau you can go to Mendenhal Glacier which is a National Park. The cruise lines get about $40 per person for the bus ride to the park and back and then you have to pay the admission fee to the park. There is a local bus service that will take you out there for about $5 each way. (Well it was $5 when I went four years ago). The converted school bus stops at the cruise ships. Also in Juneau you can take the tramway to the top of Mt. Roberts which is directly across the street from the ships. What a fantastic view! If you get your ticket early in the day it is good for the whole day. The Red Dog Saloon in Juneau it is a must see. Stop in for an Alaskan Amber. The Red Dog is within walking distance of the ship but it's a long walk...or a short cab ride.
