My wife's camera is also the Canon S40. She has the 256 compact flash and she took over 250 photos at mid-range and higher resolution (not including the erased duds) and still had plenty of room left.

So I would think that with a decent amount of memory there would be no reason to pay the $15 to transfer while on the trip.

I can't remember if the shops on ships sold the memory cards although I would assume so. But now days even drug stores sell them so it wouldn't be a problem to get a new one I would think while in port.

That 10x zoom does sound nice, doesn't it?

And good advice about confirming the transfer is complete before erasing the card. In fact I'm so paranoid, I wait to erase the card until I have it copied to the hard drive on the computer and a CD once I'm home.

Also when deleting the duds on the trip make sure you don't accidently hit the erase all area. Ouch! I did that while experimenting with my camera pre-cruise. Fortunately for me they were only practice/test shots so it was no big deal in that case.
