Damage to Flagship Hotel in Galveston

When I was in Galveston last Friday, we drove by the Flagship Hotel. It was the first time I had been down Seawall Blvd. since Hurricane Ike. When I went on my cruise in May, we didn't go down to the oceanfront since the port is on the opposite side of the island. Anyway, my daughter took a couple pictures as we drove by. From the pictures, you really can't see all the damage there is. And its sad.....because they are going to tear down the hotel; I just don't know when. The Flagship was the only hotel in the United States that was built out over water. Below are the pictures we took.

As I said since the pictures were taken from the street as we were driving by, you really can't see the extent of the damage. Since the hotel is built out over the water, there is (or I should say was) a ramp from Seawall Blvd. up to the hotel (the 3rd picture). The part of the ramp over the water is now missing because of Ike and you can't even get up to the hotel!

How sad. Also sad it that the taggers have managed to mark their territory.

It's funny how deceiving a picture is. In that first picture, it makes it look like the street and the beach are at the same level. The street is actually at the same level as the seawall and the seawall is 17 feet high. :lol

Thanks for the pictures.

Hurricane Ike was just a couple of years ago -- wonder what they will do with the hotel?

Actually, it hasn't even been a year since Ike. It made landfall in Galveston on Sept. 13th of last year.

I had stayed there many times in the past Corky and it was a very nice hotel. It was like being on a cruise ship.......you could sit out on your balcony and all you saw was water. Granted it wasn't clear blue water :lol but it was the ocean nonetheless.

Sometimes, as far as the Ocean goes, you gotta take what you can get. :thumb

Have sailed from Galveston many times and usually stay at the Holiday Inn just down the street. Have been back twice since we were on the Ike cruise and there is still alot of damage not repaired - especially on the other end of the island. Takes a long time.

imagine being in those rooms...

That was one nasty storm, Nita, have you ever seen that film of the 1900's hurricane? It always amazed me the damage that was done. But they had no seawall, and in most spots they are actually below sea level

I remember either Ashton Villa or the Bishops palace has this cute iron railing around the house.. (CRS) it is only a couple of feet high, and when I first moved down there and saw it I thought who on earth would bother putting up such a short fence. Then you go in the house and find out that there is actually another level to the house, all filled in with silt when that storm hit. So once upon a time it had been a tall fence.

Red........the last time they had the special on TV about the 1900 hurricane, I taped it. It's such an interesting documentary and I can't even imagine how horrible it was for the residents of Galveston at the time since they didn't even know a hurricane was coming! The damage to the Flagship is extensive. And you can't tell from the few pictures I took. We should have parked the car and taken some close-up shots. From everything I've heard, the hotel will be torn down.
