We stopped in Roatan 3 years ago. I'm a teacher too, and we went straight from the ship to the school. It was a teacher workday so there were no kids. Those teachers had absolutely nothing! Classrooms with a dingy chalkboard, hardly any books, and no real supplies. They were sitting outside doing their grades because the classrooms are so dark. I've been to the Honduran mainland 4 times to work with the schools and I thought that Roatan would be much nicer-it wasn't. Roatan (Coxen Hole) was the poorest place I have ever seen! Anything at all that you could take those teachers would be great-they need everything! (paper, pencils, books, dictionaries, crayons) I'm sure that they could also distribute any clothes or whatever also. Honduran children wear uniforms to school. Navy skirts (girls) or pants and white button-up embroidered short sleeve shirts. The only place for the children to play outside the school was a beat-up concrete area with broken basketball goals. I'm sure they could use sports equipment also. Honduran children are used to a very simple diet of tortillas, rice, beans and fruit. Other types of food can make them sick-so don't take any junk food to them. Of course, they also need toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, washcloths, candles, etc. Vegetable seeds or fishing equipment would also be useful.
Good luck on your trip!
