Costa Maya is a kind of "movie set"--very pretty with nice clean well-stocked shops, a pool with a bar, an outdoor entertainment area ,restaurants, and restrooms. The salesmanship can sometimes get a little intense--understandable since I believe the only people who shop there are from the ships. The area outside of the created "port" falls off rapidly to rather poor areas and spots along the beach that are marred by litter. I went on a snorkeling tour which involved a hot cab ride over bumpy, dusty roads that ended in a "docK' that had definitely seen better days--it leaned in spots and there were missing boards. I could not help wishing that some of that economic development could spread out a little for the residents. That said, the snorkeling was good and the crew was efficient and friendly though I personally found the "party hearty" atmosphere a bit forced and did not appreciate having a parrot plunked down on my shoulder for the requisite souvenir photo. You have to have a lot of patience as, once again, the salesmanship for the photos is intense. Next time, I'll just snorkel off the beach near the ship. CM is not one of my favorite spots but it is not horrible.
