There are 2 ways you can go. Many people are brave enough to book excursions direct from local island companies. Some even allow pre booking from websites before the cruise. While this saves money by cutting out the cruise lines cut, it can be a little more dangerous as they may not guarantee that you get back to the ship on time( And the ship WILL sail without you!! ) or they may take unnecessary risks like allowing you to snorkel in rougher waters that is really safe.Or, You can book your excursion from the cruise line either before you sail or once you board but I dont think there is a cost difference by booking early (at least I have never seen one).If you plan any type of adventure excursion (snorkeling, ATV, etc) I would book through the cruise line. However, In cozumel, there is a great park on the island (chankanaab) which is a $10 taxi ride and $10 per person to get in. Once inside, you canr ent snorkel gear and have a ball. There would be no need to pay the $30+ per person from the cruise line to take the same taxi to the place.Hope this helps a little
