Can you sleep with your balcony door open at night, or would it be too cold?

First cruise, first balcony, want to get all I can out of it. I know I won't get hummingbirds on my balcony, but is it doable to leave it open at night, and listen to the ocean?

I have already informed the family that every breakfast will be room service overlooking the ocean Are the balcony's big enough for 3 chairs? Will they bring me another one if I ask pretty?

Oh, what fun I am going to have. I haven't sailed yet, but I am a bonafied C@ already!

I'm with you!!! I have been on 3 cruises...but I will have my first balcony on the Vision in Feb...and I plan to take full advantage...with breakfast in the morning out overlooking the ocean!!! I can't wait. I sure would love to have 4 chairs...as mine only shows three...but I think it is a matter of available space...my balcony is only 41 sq ft...about the size of our bedroom closet...lol.

If another chair will fit, ask you cabin steward to bring one for you. As for the door, many leave it open but apparently there is some sort of sensor (and I know nothing about this, never heard of it until a few months ago when I read it here) that wont allow the A/C to run while the door is open. It wont be too cold, its very nice down there especially this time of year. You might actually have the opposite problem of it being too warm. Anyways, someone mentioned something about using a magnent that tricks the sensor... but again, Im :? about that. Im planning to leave mine open, weather permitting, this next time too. For some stupid reason, I didnt think about it last time. I'll be the 3rd pax in the cabin, so I will be right near the balcony and I want to be lulled to sleep by the sounds of the ocean..... cant wait! (and for those who get uptight about running the A/C with the door open, I wont do that.... this is another one of "those" topics, Glo... lol).

Take this advise from a Floridean, don't leave the door open at night. The humidity is terrible on your sinuses and on your clothes. Everything will be damp by morning. If you want to leave the door open during the day in the sunshine that's fine you won't have a problem.

It also contributes to the grown of mold. The humidity in the Caribbean as well has here in Florida can damage just about anything.

I thought you need some sort of bungee cord to hold the door open, is this true?

G-Lo,

I agree with the others. It's humid in the Caribbean and it just isn't comfortable to have your room taken over by that level of humidity. Sticky, heavy, nasty. Yuck.

You'll enjoy your balcony for several hours a day, I can tell, so the cool, low-humidity sanctuary that is your cabin will provide a very comfortable contrast.

You're gonna have a great time!

Agree, thought this would be great when I sailed on Explorer. First night we had the door open.... a few hours later, it was hot, sticky and just uncomfortable. Left it open though. The next morning sealed it...530 am, the pilot's boat comes along side, right under our room, toots his horn too. My wife had to peel me off the ceiling. After ten minutes of clanging, shouting and engines reving, we shut the door, and didnt open it again at night.

On cool evenings there is nothing like sleeping with the door open. Just the sound of the waves crashing against the ship at night is the most soothing sound. Just remember to only leave it open when you have a sea day the next morning. You don't want to wake up docked with people waving and looking at you.

Good advice from everyone. I'll have to see how it goes. I like the idea of the sounds of the water at night, but it's the teenage alien life form that will be in the foldout by the doors, and since it's in her territory, she'll get to decide!

Maria, I love you gif. Have you seen the new Pepto Bismol commerical? It looks like it's doing the Pepto dance! LOL!

Love the sounds....door open...air conditioning off...until we get dressed for dinner....then a/c on..door closed for a bit....back from dinner...door open ...a/c off....of course this was this past May and also in a November cruise...no idea of what to do summer time!

As has been mentioned on other threads, take a bungee, and some duct tape along. Between the two, that sucker WILL stay open. The open door is great, unless as posted above, it is hot and humid. As you read here and other threads, you will find most people use it in the AM to sit out and have breakfast. It is your cruise, so, knock yourself out!!! You learn by doing. When you get back, you can then share your knowledge with others. Take lots of pictures and be sure to post a review. It is always great to get a 1st timers point of view. Enjoy !!

The balconies on RCI are sliding doors and they don't need a bugee cord, they just stay open. With the exception of about 4 aft balcony cabins on the Voyager class ships that are only a single door and may need a bungee cord for those. As for the part about the A/C turning off automatically when the balcony door is opened, this has never happened on any of our cruises, the A/C stayed on unless we turnrd it off of course. I have heard Carnival has the sensor thing on the balcony door(don't know this first hand though) but have never had one on RCI. Not even on the Navigator and that is a newer ship.

Okay, I hesitate to mention it, but here goes....

For personal safety reasons, it's a good idea to leave the balcony door closed and locked at night. On some ships, it's quite possible for a motivated individual (and freaks are usually pretty motivated) to climb from one balcony to the next. It's a dangerous--even crazy--thing to attempt, but people who are drunk, high or otherwise "off" seem very willing to take enormous risks in pursuit of a bad idea.

Is it likely to happen? Of course not. But crimes are committed on cruise ships every day, and some of them are serious. With your daughter in the cabin, why risk it?

Save the ocean sounds for the times when you're awake to hear them.

We just returned from a repositioning cruise on the Grandeur of the Seas. I can definitely tell you that when the balcony door is open, the AC shuts off. It would get pretty warm in the cabin, esp. during the day. One night when we were near Aruba, it was so humid and hot in the evening, that when my husband went out on the balcony, tthe mirriors in the room immediately fogged up. Then I noticed a strange light coming from the top of our closet. It was the emergency light on one of the life jackets! They are water activated and stayed on for about 15 min.
