We will be in Boston next July.(attending a convention) What should we do with our free time? I was looking on-line for some brochures & they charge for them!

So, I thought I'd come to the experts! What's not to be missed? Anything we should skip? We do plan to try an attend a baseball game if there is a home game during our trip(and we can get tickets!) Don't forget to include the restarants in your suggestions!=COOL

I'm sure our very own Bostonians will jump in with a list of things that the usual "tourist" misses. On my 2, not long enough, trips to Boston these are the things that I read about before I arrived and many of the things I saw after I got there. There is so much to see that I need to go again and again and again. I love Boston!!! You can search online for loads of FREE information.

Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market http://www.faneuilhallmarketplace.com/

The Freedom Trail http://www.thefreedomtrail.org/

Harvard Square

The North End

Beacon Hill http://www.aviewoncities.com/boston/beaconhill.htm

Ride the Swan Boats (or at least take a photo) in the Public Garden...and buy the children's book Make Way for Ducklings for your children or grandchildren (even if they haven't been born yet!)

The Union Oyster House...America's oldest restaurant for oysters or clam chowder http://www.unionoysterhouse.com/

Shopping Filene's basement! My Mom talked about this place since I was a very small girl (and that's a long, long time ago)! It was fun to visit the place "where bargains were born."

Have a drink or lunch at the Bull and Finch Pub and say "Cheers"!

Have fun doing your research. Boston, in my opinion, is one of the most interesting cities in all of the United States.

Great information, Beryl. :thumb

I am sorry to report, though, that Filene's Basement is closed for a two-year renovation.

Another site to try is the National Park Service's page for Boston: http://www.nps.gov/bost.

Where in Boston will the convention be held? Do you know which hotel you'll be using? (You can PM me with the hotel name if you prefer.) I'm happy to give additional restaurant recommendations--I certainly eat out a lot as I don't cook. :)

Edited to add: How long will you be staying?

1. Boston Duck Tours.

2. New England Aquarium & Whale Watch Cruise. Whale watch cruises leave from right outside the aquarium.

3. 2007 World Champion, Red Sox Game.

4. Lunch at the Barking Crab.

Beryl hit on many of the tourist things to do. If you like museums the Boston Science Museum is also an amazing visit. And the Aquarium is also a very good visit. You could also take a tour of the USS Constitution "Old Ironsides" http://www.ussconstitution.navy.mil/Announcements.htm.

Restaurants. Abe and Louie's, Boston Back Bay, for steaks and seafood, also the Capital Grill also wonderful beef. Both known for their service and pricey, but well worth the price IMO. Another good bet is the Coach Grill.

I know Hucc will disagree but my favorite pizza, italian sausage and lamb BBQ is Santarpios in East Boston. http://www.santarpiospizza.com/ Very reasonable and very casual.
