Belize?

If we take a shore excursion (say the city tour and airboat ride 2.5 hours), will we still have time to go do a few things in the city or at a beach on our own?

There really isnt a beach in Belize. after your tour you could have time to shop at the pier before youhead back onto the tenders.

Would it be worth the time to take a taxi into Belize city? Also, what type of items to they have at the pier?
Thanks for you help!

When you get off the tender from the ship you are basically in the middle of Belize City. When you get off the tender you are in the shopping area, which is closed off from the general public. It's a fairly small place with the usual tee shirts, bags, leather, wood carvings, jewelry stores, etc. A couple of liqour stores and I remember at least one pharmacy. I was there last week and there was band set up in the shopping area. I don't know if this is a regular thing or not. There are a couple of bars & restaraunts. If you go through the shopping / terminal bldg. to where you get on the tour buses, there are a few small stalls set up across the street.
If you are interested in beaches, I would closely check the shore excursions offered by your cruise line to see what they have to offer. Belize City is not somewhere you would want to go off wandering around on your own. The tender ride is 4-5 miles in a high speed boat. It takes 12-15 minutes to and from the ship.
Belize is a pretty country when you get out into the countryside but if you do take a tour on your own, keep an eye on the time as Belize City is not the place you would want to miss the ship.

We took a water taxi to Caye Chalker. 17.50 rt. What a great day! The water taxi is out the gates to the left walk for about 10 mins. The city of Belize is a bit grungy. The boat ride is about 40 mins to the caye and runs often. When you reach the pier go right to the end called the split. You can snorkel and swim. Beautiful! Bring your own gear and beach stuff. There is a bar there called the Lazy Lizard. Have drink called lizard juice.Awsome.We had the best time there. We are going back in the fall to stay for a week we loved it so much.Hope this helps. Any questions feel free to e-mail me.

We went on a ship excursion for snorkeling and a (short) beach break. It was a lot of fun. There was free punch and I had a little too much, but it was still fun! We had time to get back to the boat, pick up my Mom and take a tender into port to do a little shopping. There wasn't much there , so it was perfect!

Belize is roped off with a big fence and concertina wire, like a 'ghettttto' in the 'hood. I will never go there again, bunch of junk to 'buy' worse than dollar store stuff. NO beaches nearby. Too dangerous to try to navigate on your own. Try to avoid this port.

We have been twice now, the first time we were told not to make a quick judgement that it was a relatively new port and that the country was quickly shaping up, we went last April again and it had gotten worse, prostitutes soliciting people with small children right outside the gate in front of armed officers, then going through town there were so many beggers and nasty people, plus it was filthy, my advise stay on the boat.
