Avoid unwanted calls during cruise

I have an Android Smart phone. Trying to figure out how to block any calls or texts while on cruise to avoid huge charges.
Have tested different ways before I leave home later this month for cruise.
With Airplane mode on AND WiFi calling toggled off, I still get texts!!!
In case it makes any difference, my carrier is Verizon.

We have Verizon also and have not had any extra charges for phone calls even the ones we place ourselves. We stay in the "airplane mode" from ship departure back to end of cruise. We have Wi-Fi calling turned "on" since you want all communications to only use Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is usually needed for communications within the ship anyway. Wi-Fi Calling should always be turned on even when back home. With Wi-Fi Calling the phone will decide if the Verizon Network or your home's Wi-Fi provides the best signal and will use whichever is best. While at home, your Wi-Fi will usually be much better than incoming Verizon service. Whichever system the phone uses will be transparent to you and you will never know which network you are using.

Maybe our Verizon Plan is different than yours. We have one of the top Plans and it includes a international calling option, although I have never been able to figure out what that means.

In any case, I recommend that you called Verizon Customer Service before your next out-of-country trip and find out exactly what you need.

Use the Ship’s Wi-Fi & Messaging Apps: Instead of using cellular service, connect to the ship's Wi-Fi (often available via a paid plan) and use apps like WhatsApp, iMessage, Facebook Messenger, or Skype to text, call, or video chat with family and friends. This keeps your communication data on the ship’s network.
