I fell asleep at the computer, and when I woke up there was a message on the screen that IE had encountered a problem and needed to close. I sent the error report, and it came back with a message that said the problem ocurred because I had missed a Microsoft Update. Could you hear me screaming from where you are??????

What was really funny about it tho, was that I had told my son since I had to do all this downloading anyway, I was going to go ahead and get Service Pack 3 instead of just waiting for the update. But, I couldn't find just the update for XP. They had the XP pro, and Office Pro, and the one for techs and professionals, but not just for peons. I asked TJ where to find it, and my dear son just said, "Mom just wait until they send it to you".

That is what this update was!!!!!!!! After it was installed, I got another message from them saying, guess what? There was another update I had missed. Somewhere, Bill Gates is doing a Les Nesman snicker behind his hand at me, I just know it.

:dizzy.. I am so grateful for DH Mark, and DS Stephen, as I stumble through Computer World 102.....I know in another life I hope to be computer savvy..but until then..:(...Good luck cc...=hugs Joanne

I received more instructions from my Micorsoft tech today to fix my speaker problem but I wont have time to work on it till the weekend after we get back from our Alaska cruise.

I have had more problems with this computer also. I don't like the Vista Windows.

I have Vista too and I can't seem to get the hang of it very well. I'm like cc - thank goodness for techy sons or I wouldn't get anywhere with computer stuff.

Good luck Connie!

Yeah Connie thats the one I Installed yesterday, the 3 pack, they let me know at the bottom of your screen in the right hand corner, microsoft updates,I ignored it for a couple of days,so hopefully they will inform you again soon.

Oh CC, that can be sooo frustrating!

I have Vista, and I have to say that it is working well. I am very happy with it, knock on wood!!

I've never had a major melt down on any of my computers (know on wood) so finally decided I'd better do a back up. Something I've never done. Got it all done and now I have a portable hard drive with all photos and docs on it for backup. Each photo counted as 1 file and I backed up over 39,000 files. Couldn't believe I had that many photos and docs on here. Sure am glad now I did it so I'm ready if I have a major melt down except for my favorite list. One day will have to figure out how to put it on my backup.

I am going to share my computer saga. The old Dell is/was a month shy of it's 5th birthday. I called Dell a few weeks ago to order a new one.....with XP, only to be told that they stopped selling XP on their computers on June 26th. Forward to 2 weeks ago, Ex's wife told me he had just ordered her a new DELL with XP...HUH??? We chatted, found that he ordered it under BUSINESS section of the Dell website. They are still selling XP Pro there......and guess what.....they are cheaper!!!! You just have to know what you want/don't want (which I do), make up a company name.....we had an old one that I used and PRESTO, you are shipped a sweet machine with more power than you can dream of.....with NO JUNK loaded on it. I have my own copy of Office, so I didn't need that. I had speakers with a sub-woofer, didn't need that. I did spring for a new flat wide screen monitor......HATE IT.......want my old flat screen back from my daughter! I am already short and round. Now looking at things on this monitor I am even squattier (is that a word?) UGH!

I was able to get more machine for my money. I got the Vostro 410 with XP Pro AND the upgrade CD to Vista on a special for $99 to have BOTH (if I choose to ever install it....NOT.....I have it on my laptop, not my fav.) It has 4 gigs of Ram and a 320 gig hard drive. I sprung for the NVIDIA video card (worth the $250 IMHO because of my work with photos and graphics) 2 DVD/CD W drives, a 19 in 1 card reader......and not much else.......for $1500. $800 cheaper than my last Dell. This thing FLIES!!!!

Oh.......and in the ordering process they try to sell you a TREE......I declined. So if you are looking for a machine with XP.......THIS is how to get it......LIE!!! ;) (:D
