This is a tip that certainly won't apply to many -- but it helped me gain platinum status at Princess just recently, so I thought it was worth posting.
When I was a child, my grandmother took me on a number of cruises, from the time I was eight, until I was fourteen. They were on different lines, four of them with Princess. Just last year (20 years since my previous Princess Cruise with ole Grammy) I took an Alaskan Cruise (Dawn Princess, Aug 2002), and saw that they had a frequent cruisers program. I commented to a host onboard that if I could have gotten credit for the cruises I took as a child, I would be platinum. She said, if I could find out the dates, I could probably get credit for them.
Thank God for a mother who keeps records of everything. She found documents that dated back to the '70's and I sent them in -- thinking it was a long-shot that these would ever give me platinum status.
But, poof, one day in my mail, there it was. My welcome letter to the Platinum level.
I'll be travelling on the Grand on June 8th with a friend, and right now we're booked in a BA (balcony on Caribe, C332), and from what I've heard I have a pretty good chance of being upgraded -- plus I'll have the free internet access -- which is priceless to me. That alone would keep me on Princess ships.
So anyway, I just wanted to let everyone know that even dusty old documents from before the inception of the Captain's Circle program can get you the respect you('d like to think you) deserve.
I'll be posting some questions about upgrades, and what to expect shortly. Just wanted to leave this tip while it was on my mind.
